Principal’s Report

Welcome to week eight and the start of some beautiful spring weather. As students will be outside for various activities and break times, please ensure that all clothing is clearly labelled.

This is an exciting week for parents to come to school and support their children’s learning during Topsy Turvy week on all sites as part of Literacy and Numeracy Week. The sessions enable our students to become the teachers and share their knowledge with their parents. It also gives the students a chance to reflect on their learning and provides a forum for student self-assessment as detailed in our Business Plan. Please check the calendar for the site times and dates which will also be on the Skoolbag app.

School Survey information has been sent to all parents of PLDS students. Thank you to parents who have already completed the survey and I would like to invite all parents to participate in 2016. Your feedback about our wonderful school is important and helps us make a great school even better, so we look forward to your responses.

We are thrilled to share our news about the successful NAPLAN results from the year three students this year. The results are a testament to the work you as parents do with your children and the PLDS whole school approaches to quality teaching and learning with our Kindergarten to year three students. Parents will receive this information shortly and we were able to share the data with our School Board at a meeting last Friday.

We were privileged to have the expertise of Dame Pat Collarbone DBE, FRSA who worked with the Leadership Team and the School Board last week. Dame Pat is an education advisor who works with public bodies in England, including the National College for School Leadership (NCSL), the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The sessions were highly successful to compliment the work we do at Peel and to generate plans for 2017 and beyond.

You will find exciting news about all sites in this newsletter including Bungaree Open night tomorrow (Tuesday 6th) from 3.00pm – 5.00pm. We look forward to welcoming Bungaree parents to view your child’s work and see the open classes. Please enjoy reading the information and looking at the photos of Pinjarra Book Week, Mandurah sports carnival and the Fire and Rescue Team visit to Bungaree.

We have been meeting with year three parents across all sites to provide information about Transition for year three students. Thank you to parents who attended these valuable sessions.

This Friday 9th will be the opening of the annual art display Artacular at the junior assembly. A big thanks to Miss Power and her band of helpers for her hard work on this project. If you can’t attend the school assembly, please come and view the wonderful art work on display in the Resource Room.

Information has also been sent home about the Life Education Van which will be at school working with students at our Rockingham Lakes campus during weeks 9 and 10. The very professional team will be working with Pre-Primary to year three students.

Enjoy the sunshine everyone.

Mandurah Sports Carnival

On Thursday the 1st September Mandurah Campus held their Sports Carnival. The students arrived wearing their faction colours creating a sea of red, blue and green.

The students were kept busy all day rotating through many events such as jumps, throws, sprints, team games and novelty games. The scores were tight all day and it came down to the relays in the afternoon. Peel (red faction) ended up victorious at the end of the day.

The students from Peel Language tried their best and never gave up as they competed to their full potential. Although they were exhausted at the end of the day, they all had a lot of fun. Peel Language was well represented during the presentations.

April Palelei was year 1 runner-up champion girl, Jake Dopson was year 1 runner-up champion boy and Harry Barkes was year 2 runner-up champion boy. Well done to our champions and well done to all who competed.

Bungaree Campus

Room 1

Year 3 students in Room 1 had a fantastic time when the Fire and Rescue Team came to visit our class. Students were given the opportunity to climb into the fire trucks, explore the large amount of equipment used in an emergency situation and feel what it is like to use a real fire hose.

Students were also exposed to the more serious side of what it might be like to be in a real life fire situation. The importance of fire alarms was reinforced and students were provided with strategies to use when exiting a burning building.

Kylie, Noah, Troy and Bill were amazed at how much equipment was on the trucks

All students were encouraged to go home and talk to their families about developing an emergency exit plan.

Cameron, Issac, Noah and Oliver had to use all their strength to hold on to the fire hose

Tips for Book Sharing

Book sharing is having a caring adult responding to what catches the child’s interest in a book, and making ‘reading’ an interactive and fun experience for a child. Book sharing plays a vital role in the development of your child’s speech, language and literacy skills.

Types of Books

Short Books with rhyme, rhythm and repetition create the best opportunity for your child to interact with you.

Picture Books are great for improving your child’s vocabulary. Try using photos or pictures from magazines

Interactive Books ‘Lift-the-Flap’, ‘Pop-up’, and ‘Touch-and-feel’ books keep your child entertained. Your child will be excited to see what is on the next page. Create suspense to keep them engaged.
