Principal’s Report
Welcome back to term 2. With the cooler weather can we ask that you ensure that your child has a warmer layer of labelled school attire for the cooler mornings. In addition as the days get cooler the children tend to get a bit hungrier so it is a good idea to pack a bit extra in their lunch boxes. This term is nine weeks in duration with school concluding for the winter break on June 29th.
Week one has had a smooth return for all campuses. The staff met on Monday the 30th April for our term 2 Professional Development Day. There was input on Jolly Grammar, our new Business Plan was added to and the Annual Report was presented. The staff were fully engaged and have new ideas and directions for classes for the rest of the year. We thank the staff for their dedication to their ongoing professional learning to improve student outcomes at Peel LDS.
This week at the Rockingham Lakes Campus we had our Anzac ceremony. If you were lucky enough to attend you would have seem the students showing great respect during the service to the veterans of the defence forces across Australia and New Zealand. It was a lovely service with many community members coming to share their congratulations to the campus on the appropriateness of the service and the outstanding student behaviour. Well done to all who contributed to this success. Also at Rockingham Lakes there is new fencing going up on the oval side of the campus. This will be a real asset to ensuring that our school is more secure.
Just a reminder that week three of this term is Naplan for year three students. Naplan is a moment in time assessment. Please can you reassure your child and try not to put undue pressure on them to perform. We will be doing the same here at school. Please be reassured that teachers have done all the necessary teaching and preparation to make Naplan as seamless a process for the students as we can. Your cooperation will be appreciated.
Finally Mrs Collins has had her overdue knee operation. We all wish her well as she begins the journey to recovery and she will be back at school as good as new in a few short weeks.
Stay warm and safe.

NAPLAN 2018 Year 3 Students
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Year 3 students at Peel Language Development School are encouraged to complete the NAPLAN testing. It is carried out in a safe, non-threatening environment usually in their own classroom, supervised by their own teacher.
NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of:
- Reading
- Writing
- Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- Numeracy
NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum.

This term, students in D3 will be learning about food! We will be participating in cooking sessions every fortnight and looking at different foods featured in children’s literature.
Some of the stories we will explore include “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “The Gigantic Turnip,” “Handa’s Surprise” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”
We will also be looking at non-fiction texts such as cooking books and how they are written differently to fiction texts.
In Health we will be looking at healthy foods and in The Arts we will be learning food songs and printing with different fruits and vegetables.
In Math we will be learning how to measure and compare different sizes and weights of food.
We are looking forward to a fun and busy term!
Mandurah Campus
Welcome to Term 2! All the teachers at the Mandurah Campus hope that you have all had wonderful holidays!
Over the school holidays, everyone from Peel Mandurah was invited to the grand opening of Bunnings Mandurah. Last term, the Bunnings Mandurah team came to the school and helped to install three mud kitchens, a sensory area behind Room 18 and a bench to use at recess and lunch. There were two other community groups invited along and we were awarded an engraved picture frame with all the students and the Bunnings team. There were pictures around the Bunnings store and will be up for the public to view, we even got to meet Matt Priddis from the Eagles!
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the whole Bunnings Mandurah team. We are grateful to be a part of such a worthwhile project that enhances student learning and our involvement within the community. Thank you to the families that also came along, early on the first day of school holidays.
On Thursday, the whole school attended our own Anzac ceremony held at the school. It is on the 25th of April, however as we were not at school we were able to hold it on the first week back. It was a time where we could all remember and commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served in the war.
We look forward to a term with lots of learning and we are excited for the term ahead!
Bungaree Campus
At the end of Term 1 students at the Bungaree Campus who had retained their good standing were rewarded with a block party. Students were able to move between the classrooms choosing from fun activities such as construction tasks, board games, drawing or watching a movie. Thanks to the P&C everyone had a yummy bag of popcorn. Congratulations to all of our students, we had a 100% attendance due to all students retaining their good standing by choosing effort, respect and safety in the classroom and playground. Well done to everyone.

ANZAC Day
On the 9th of May, Bungaree PS held their ANZAC day assembly. The entire school made a paper poppy to plant outside in the school garden, to commemorate this day. Students also took part in making poppy wreaths and ANZAC art, which looked fantastic!
We were so very proud of all students’ outstanding behaviour at our ANZAC assembly. Well done to everyone!! ‘We shall remember them’.

Pinjarra Campus
On behalf of all the staff at PLDS Pinjarra campus, we would like to welcome all the parents and students back for Term 2.
On Thursday the 3rd of May we were lucky enough to have one of our PLDS teachers Justine Daly present an ANZAC day information session to our students. The students were so interested and excited to learn about all the fantastic artefacts that Ms Daly discussed and explored with them. I have included a photo of some of room 30’s awesome ANZAC day activities.
We have lots of exciting events happening this term and look forward to keeping you updated!

Meningococcal Vaccination
On 23 January 2018, WA Health introduced a program to provide free meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) catch-up vaccine for all children aged 12 months to less than 5 years.
This MenACWY vaccination program was initiated because of the rising number of meningococcal infections in WA and last year children in this age group had more than twice the number of meningococcal infections compared to any other age group.
Parents of age-eligible children should not delay because the WA catch-up vaccination programs is time limited and will end on 31 Dec 2018.
MenACWY vaccines are safe to administer at the same time as other scheduled childhood vaccines and are available through their child’s regular immunisation provider.
