Principal’s Report
Welcome back to term two, we hope you enjoyed the holiday break and the amazing weather.
Term two will be a busy and exciting term with; the school disco, PLDS Open Day, the AGM for the School Board and P&C, and NAPLAN in weeks three and four. Most of the NAPLAN test will be completed online this year and students have been well prepared by their teachers to ensure the process is completed smoothly. Thank you to Mrs Neeson, Mrs Whelan and Mr Voges for your work in coordinating this.
Week one had a smooth return for all campuses with students enjoying catching up with friends and settling back into school programs. Our staff met on Monday 29 April for our term two Professional Development Day where we reviewed our school focus areas and embedding play based language strategies into learning programs. We thank the staff for their dedication to their ongoing professional learning to improve student outcomes at Peel LDS.
As the cool autumn mornings and warmer days are here, can we ask that all jackets and jumpers are clearly labelled. Students tend to get a bit hungrier as well, so it is a good idea to pack an extra snack in their lunch boxes.
Anzac ceremonies were held across all sites with students showing great respect during the services to the veterans of the defence forces across Australia and New Zealand. They also enjoyed learning more about the history of our country and the role of our veterans. I hope you enjoy the yummy recipe for ANZAC biscuits in this newsletter. I would like to particularly acknowledge Ms Justine Daly and her family for providing the moving PowerPoint tribute at RLPS campus.
Mrs Nina Murray and her dedicated science team have been forming successful partnerships with Bunnings who are donating supplies to our school. Our school community is also benefiting from donations of tiles and pavers to enhance the grounds of our school. Thank you to staff for your work in initiating these projects.
I would also like to thank Mr Ben Voges for organising the Constable Care incursion and hope you enjoy the photos in this newsletter.
On behalf of PLDS I would like to wish all our mums a happy and relaxing Mother’s Day and would like to thank the P&C and their volunteers for your work in organising this.
This week is the junior assembly and we will be presenting a bike to the lucky winner. Thank you to all parents who were able to pay their voluntary contributions and charges by the end of term one.
Have a safe and happy week.

Annual Public Meeting
Bungaree Campus
On Thursday, the 2nd of May, Bungaree PS held their Anzac Day assembly. All classes made a beautiful Anzac poppy wreath and two students from each class were chosen to lay the wreath at the foot of our Australian flag pole during the ceremony.
We would like to commend all students for their respectful and wonderful behaviour during our Anzac assembly.
All classes have been learning about the history of Anzac Day and completed lots of Anzac Day related art and activities. Students have learnt that the ‘ANZACS’ or the ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’ were the brave soldiers who stood, fought, and died during the First World War.
Uniform Shop Bungaree There have been recent changes to the Uniform Shop opening days. Please see below for the new days and time. Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8 – 9am |
Mandurah Campus
We have had a wonderful and busy start to Term 2 at Mandurah. We started off with having Constable Care coming to visit us on Wednesday and talk to us about how to stay safe and who we can talk to when we are feeling unsafe. The students all enjoyed the show and completed activities in their classroom to follow on from it. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Voges for organising this for us.
We attended the school’s ANZAC assembly on the first Thursday back as ANZAC day was on the school holidays. Students in Room 11 listened to a story and wrote letters to the ANZACs.
Week 2 brings a full week of swimming lessons. Please remember to bring in your child’s swimming items every day this week. We know that all the students are going to be fantastic and learn vital skills that they will need when in the water.
RLPS Campus
3.4
On Tuesday the 30th April at Rockingham Lakes Campus, we had a commemoration service in honour of ANZAC day. We followed this with various activities and discussions throughout the day.
3.4 joined with 3.3 in the afternoon and we made ANZAC biscuits.
The students learnt the importance of keeping their hands clean when we cook and prepare food for other people. Along with this they learnt the names of the utensils and ingredients they were using, and what they used them for.
They also used their maths skills when they needed to weigh and measure ingredients correctly.
The students also learnt that a recipe is a procedure and that it is important to follow the procedure if they want the end product to work.
They all took turns mixing and rolling the biscuits. When they were cooking in the oven the smell was amazing – and they tasted delicious too!
This is the recipe we used if you would like to try them at home.

Pinjarra Campus
On behalf of all the staff at PLDS Pinjarra campus, we would like to welcome all the parents and students back for Term 2.
On Thursday the 2nd of May we joined our host school Pinjarra Primary in commemorating ANZAC Day 2019 with a beautifully pieced together service to pay tribute to, and remember those who have served past and present.
The service included some wonderful guest speakers from the local Pinjarra RSL, student representatives reciting poems and pieces of writing that they had written to honour their family members, the laying of the wreath by the Pinjarra Girl Guides, and finally the sounding of the Last Post followed by a one minute silence.
We have lots of exciting events happening this term and look forward to keeping you updated.

Colds
Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:
- Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards. (Sneeze into elbow if unable to wash hands without help).
- Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
- Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
- Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
- Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
- Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.
What to do if your child gets a cold
No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest: This need not be in bed.
- Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.
Germs are spread easily to classroom staff and other students. Keep your child home if your child cannot;
- Cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
- Wipe his/ her nose independently
- Wash hands without help
