Principal’s Report

Welcome to the first newsletter for term four. We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday and managed to spend some time outside even though we still had some wintry weather. Our students have enjoyed seeing their friends again and have settled back into routines and activities. Term four will be a busy term with Induction, Transition, swimming, sports carnivals, school picnic and various other events. Further information will come out in the following weeks.

Students across all campuses have had an exciting start to term four. The students at Mandurah are now able to access a school bus and have settled into the new routine. They are also looking forward to swimming and the assembly item. Bungaree are joining in the ‘Paddock to Plate’ initiative which helps students learn all about where their food comes from! Students at the RLPS campus have enjoyed learning about transport in Kindy and representing their factions at the sports carnival on Wednesday. Our Pinjarra students have settled well back into the school routines.

The P & C group across all campuses do an amazing job working in the canteen, voluntary roles and fund raising. If any parents of students at the RLPS campus have some time available to volunteer, please let the P & C or our front office know. School Banking is a great way to teach students about saving money and Heather Phillips has been working with the bank to provide some prizes as incentives to school banking.

The Placement Panel have met this week to review the applications for a place at one of our PLDS sites. Successful applicants will be notified shortly and be invited to attend our Induction Days at Port Kennedy, Rockingham, Pinjarra and Mandurah campuses.

I would like to remind all parents to update your details at our front office if there is a change of address or phone number. It is vital that we are able to contact you in the event of an emergency. If you have or are changing addresses please give our front office a copy of your proof of address document such as a utility bill to keep our records current.

Thank you to parents who were able to complete the School Survey. Your feedback is valued to make our great school even better!

World Teacher’s Day is on the last Friday of the month, the 26th of October. It is a day that we can celebrate and show our appreciation for the hard work, commitment and dedication shown every day by the Teachers, Educational Assistants and Support Staff.

Enjoy the fine weather and have a productive term!

Sports Carnival

On Friday 14th September we had the 2018 whole school Athletics Carnival. It was a cold and windy day but the rain stayed away, which allowed the students to have a great time. Students from years 1-6 competed in running races, relay races, individual events and team games. The students demonstrated the skills they had learnt throughout this term in their faction groups. All of the students were extremely well behaved and showed good sportsmanship. I wish to thank all of the teachers who helped with the smooth running of the day and also to all of the parents and family members who were able to come and support our athletes. It was a tight race in the end to see who the victorious faction was but Beard (blue faction) finished on top and claimed the shield. Peel Language was very well represented for the individual awards. Congratulations to Tamaroa Rakena for winning Year 2 Champion Boy (going one better than last year), Xzavier Reichardt for winning Year 3 Runner Up Champion Boy and April Palelei for winning Year 3 Runner Up Champion Girl. The school is extremely proud of your achievements.

Kindy A

This Term in Kindy A we will be learning all about transport. We will be learning the difference between land, sea and air transport. We will look at the parts and uses of various vehicles and will focus on our fine motor skills while making many different transport crafts.

We will also be looking at patterns, measure and number in Mathematics and will focus on our Phonological Awareness and Narrative skills. We have learnt so much this year in Kindy and we are looking forward to preparing to become full time Pre Primary students next year by visiting the Pre Primary classes and practicing our writing and letter sounds.

Run4Fun Colour Explosion

On Friday 12 October students and staff enjoyed a spectacular colour fun run on the oval. This year we had the fire brigade onsite spraying water on participants which added even more excitement to a very colourful day.

Pinjarra Campus

Last term ended on a fun note with us celebrating a ‘messy day’ at Pinjarra.

The Pre Primary’s and Year 1’s participated by painting with fly swats, spray bottles, and feet! We explored our senses with tubs of shaving cream, noodles, rice, and goop. It was very messy and so much FUN!

The term ahead is extremely busy as we have our Kindy Sports Carnival this week, followed by Pinjarra Primary School’s Community Scarecrow Wheelbarrow race, and our class assembly in week 3. We also have swimming lessons ahead of us this term as well as lots of work to finish as we head toward the end of the school year. We thank our parents for their support this term and look forward to providing lots of photos of our upcoming events.

Mandurah Campus

Welcome back to all our families at the Mandurah Campus. We hope that you have had a wonderful holiday and are ready for a busy term ahead.

We have had a fantastic first two weeks with the bus service that has started up this term. All the students have been very excited about going on the bus and they have settled into the routine beautifully. Please see your classroom teacher if you would like any more information regarding the bus service.

Swimming lessons start next week (week 3) and we thank all the parents who have handed in their forms and money. We are looking forward to going down to the pools and watching the students learn vital lifesaving skills when in the water.

Room 10 and Room 14 have been busy practising their assembly item and we are looking forward to watching it on Friday the 2nd of November. Students will be singing “Pete the Cat Rocking his School Shoes.” Please keep an eye on communication books for any further information regarding the assembly. We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible on the day. Happy term four!

Mandurah Staff

Bungaree Campus

This term, all Bungaree classes are participating in the ‘Paddock to Plate’ initiative, which promotes healthy eating and teaches students about ‘where food comes from’. All classes were supplied a wheelbarrow, watering can, tool trolley, soil and fruit or vegetable seedlings by the Bungaree Science teacher Mrs Schicker.

Room 1 are growing tomatoes. Room 2 are growing strawberries. Room 3 are growing carrots and room 4 are growing

Rooms 1, 2, 3 & 4 excitedly set up their wheelbarrows with soil and planted their seedlings late last term. Now, over Term 4, they will care for their plants & watch them grow. The idea for this initiative is to eventually use the fruit and vegetable produce grown to make a healthy meal.

We will keep you updated over the term about how our plants are travelling.

New Phone Number

Our new phone number is 9553 8417. Please note that the phone will be on silent during class time. For emergencies, please call main campus on 9523 7830.

Language Tips

When we use more of our senses (see, hear, touch, smell, taste) in learning, it helps us move what we learn into our long term memory.

You remember…

  • 10% of what you read
  • 20% of what you hear
  • 30% of what you see and hear
  • 70% of what is discussed with others
  • 80% what you experience personally
  • 95% of what you teach someone

Help your child develop their oral language and memory:

  • Ask your child to help you with the shopping by remembering certain items that are needed at the shops
  • Using fingers to count and remember steps of a task (first get your hat, second get your drink bottle and third put your shoes on).
  • Cook together! Provide your child instructions for them to remember and complete. Talk about how the ingredients feel, smell and taste.
  • Play a following directions game at the park (e.g. run to the closest tree, hop to the swings and then to the bridge)
  • Read a story together, ask your child questions after each page (or the end of the book for older students) to get them to think about what they heard or saw in the pictures.
