Principal’s Report

Welcome to week 6 of term 2. A reminder again that this term is a short 9 week term and will finish up on Friday 29 June. Another date to remember for this week is the annual P & C disco. All our students will be coming to the first session. Admin will be in attendance and we hope you can come along and have a great time. Well there has certainly been a dramatic shift in the weather since our last newsletter and we have had a couple of wet weather days already. Now that it is getting cooler and wetter, please ensure that children have appropriate winter uniform clothing to keep them warm and dry. The details for the Uniform shops for all sites are included below and also the opportunities to access second hand uniforms which are often in good condition and excellent value. As it is now getting cooler, children need a little more in their lunch boxes to keep them going. Please see the information in this newsletter for links on some healthy lunch box ideas.

Teacher and students have been working hard in classes to complete work and assessment pieces for reports which will be out at the end of this term. These reports on both curriculum and ILP goals will summarise student progress to date over the past 2 terms. We hope you enjoy sharing their successes with your children.

The Annual PLDS Open Day is coming up on Monday 11th June at our Rockingham Lakes Campus. Please see the attached flyer for details. The purpose of the Open Day is to inform members of the community about the service we offer at PLDS. We look forward to meeting new families, professionals and community members to show case our school and service.

Later this term teachers will be completing the AEDC (Australian Early Development Census) for all our Pre Primary children. Parent notes have been sent home to all parents and caregivers affected and further information is included in this newsletter. Should you require more information please access the link below or contact Amanda Whelan on 9523 7830.

Thanks to our contributors to this week’s newsletter from our off sites campuses and Kindy B at our Rockingham Lakes campus. It is great to see your learning experiences in print. Well done all.

Finally this week, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our school chaplains at all of our sites. At our Mandurah site we have Ms Christina Brady and at our Pinjarra site we have Ms Karen Burke. Please see your classroom teacher for more information.

Wishing everyone a safe, happy and warm fortnight ahead.

Important information for Parents

Mandurah Campus

Last week the pre-primary, year 1, 2 and 3 class had the pleasure of attending the Mandurah inter-generational simultaneous story day. All over Australia adults and children alike were able to share pleasure in a picture book ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’.

On the day we all walked to Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. It was a beautiful day and the students were able to put what they had learned about road safety into action. Our students sat and listened beautifully to the story being read and everyone was a proud ambassador of Peel Language Development School.

After the story we were involved in participating in craft activities with senior members of the Mandurah community. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to speak with members of the community they may otherwise not get a chance to speak to.

The group I was working with shared their love of craft with a group of three elderly women and together they made some beautiful clocks. Once back at school students had a chance to practice their recount writing. Thank you to everyone involved. We all had a fantastic day.

Pinjarra Campus

We are over half way through another busy term here at Pinjarra. The Year 2/3 class really enjoy art activities and we have been busy learning about elements of art and experimenting with different drawing techniques. In their latest creation, after listening to the story ‘Desert Night, Desert Day’ by Anthony D. Fredricks students drew desert pictures using only warm or cool colours.

May the 23rd was National Simultaneous Story time where students all around Australia read the same book at the same time! This year the story was Hickory, Dickory, Dash written by Tony Wilson. All the PLDS classes combined to listen to a reading of the story then completed a range of literacy activities relating to the story.

The Year 2/3s are currently working on their writing and improving their technology skills at the same time by creating colour poems. Students had to plan, draft and publish their work on PowerPoint and create illustrations using the Paint program. Watch this space for examples of students writing when the publishing process is complete!

Bungaree Campus

We have had a busy few weeks at the Bungaree Campus!

On the 23rd of May all campuses participated in National Simultaneous Story time to promote the value of reading and literacy. ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’ written by Laura Wood was read across all campus classrooms.

Congratulations to the students in Rooms 3 and 4 who performed and awesome dance to celebrate our unique talents qualities and the power of believing in yourself. The students assisted in running the school assembly and they had a crowd of cheers for their energy and effort in their dance item. Well done!

Kindy

Kindy B has been doing lots of play based learning this semester, focusing of food and family. They have been learning to play in the shops - collecting their favourite foods in shopping baskets and then having their friend ring it through the cash register. The rich conversation the children are having with each other is amazing!

They are learning to label a variety of fruit and vegetables during shared fruit time. It is always interesting to watch the children experience the flavours of new foods. Everyone seems to love banana and apple, but capsicum and cucumber can be an entirely different story! The social interaction amongst the children during shared fruit time can be very amusing!

On a recent wet weather day, Kindy B enjoyed an "indoor wet weather picnic" on the mat with their friends from Mr. Forward's pre-primary class. It was very novel to be eating lunch on the floor rather than at a table. After lunch they were able to burn off some energy doing fancy hoola hooping and dance moves with Mr. Voges in an undercover area outside.

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

  • Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.
  • Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
  • Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
  • Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
  • Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
  • Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a cold

No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

  • Rest: This need not be in bed.
  • Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children.

Hand washing

Washing hands is the easiest way to protect ourselves from contagious diseases, like colds, influenza and gastroenteritis. Hands should be washed before and after eating or preparing food, after going to the toilet and after nose blowing.

When teaching your child to wash their hands:

  • Use clean water and soap, making sure they cover their hands and wrists.
  • Use a brush to clean under nails if they’re dirty too
  • Dry their hands with something clean (like a paper towel)

Alcohol based sanitizers are useful when soap and water is not available. Use half a teaspoon of the product and encourage your child to rub their hands together until they’re dry. If you can see dirt on their hands, it is better to use soap and water.

Gastroenteritis

Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes, fever.astroenteritis, or ‘gastro’ is a common condition in children of all ages. It occurs when the bowel is infected by a virus or bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes, fever.

Most cases in children are not serious, but it is very important to make sure that a child with gastro receives enough fluid.

If your child has gastro, keep them away from school for 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped. If symptoms persist see your family doctor.

The easiest way to prevent gastro is to make sure everyone in the family washes their hands regularly, especially before eating and after going to the toilet.

School sores

Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria. It will usually start with a blister or a group of blisters. The blisters will often pop, weep and form a crust. Small spots may spread outwards from the first spot. The spots are usually itchy.

If your child has impetigo they should be checked by a doctor. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics. You should cover the sores with watertight dressing and cut the child’s nails to prevent them from scratching. Impetigo is spread very easily, so keep the child home until 24 hours after treatment has begun. Wash hands regularly to prevent spread to others.
