Principal’s Report
Welcome to the final newsletter for Semester One. It has been a very successful semester and we have seen commendable improvements in our students. I would like to say a sincere thank you to parents, caregivers and the staff at PLDS for your hard work over the last two terms.
Teachers and our Speech and Language teams have completed final curriculum and Individual Language reports and we have seen quality student work embedding language into the curriculum over the semester. Curriculum reports and Individual Language Plan reports will be posted to parents this week. Students will also bring home work sample files and we know you will enjoy talking to your children about their achievements.
Last Wednesday was photo day for students at Rockingham Lakes campus and Thursday was photo day at Pinjarra campus, we hope you enjoy the results when your photos arrive.
We hope you were able to visit the Book Fair for 2017 which provided students and families at our Rockingham Lakes campus with a great opportunity to nurture literacy development. Thank you to our helpful volunteers for making this a successful annual event.
At our Rockingham Lakes campus we are very proud of all students who competed in the Cross Country race, particularly 3 of our students who finished in the top 5 of the competition. Tysen Bruce won for the year 3 and 4 students, Deegan Woods ran 4th place and Anthony Daraz ran 5th place.
Students at our Pinjarra campus have been learning about healthy eating and healthy food choices along with attending an exciting presentation of live speed painting by artist Phil Doncon.
I would like to sincerely thank one of our teachers at Pinjarra Miss Kay Jones, who is retiring from teaching to pursue her own business. We wish her every success in her new endeavours.
Students at our Mandurah campus have been busy developing a school garden along with participating in NAIDOC activities.
Our Bungaree students have been enjoying learning about fractions using pizzas! They loved making mini pizzas for lunch.
On Monday and Tuesday the Department of Education reviewed PLDS as an Independent Public School and our progress towards the milestones of our Business Plan 2015-2017. The discussions and feedback were very positive as we demonstrated how we provide the highest level of teaching, learning and service to our communities.
The Reviewers were VERY impressed with all aspects of our school – the distributed leadership, learning programs, support for students and parents, relationships, professionalism, sustainability of our processes and the high level of commitment from staff and parents in improving learning outcomes.
I would like to sincerely thank the Board, parents and members of our school community who volunteered their time to participate in the review. Your input was highly valued by our school and commended by the reviewers. The final report should be available by the middle of term 3.
You will find information in this newsletter about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. All schools now are required to participate. Please see attached Fact Sheet.
Please check the diary dates in this newsletter for the first day of term 3 for students and we are looking forward to productive and successful Semester Two.
Have a safe and happy holiday.

Cross Country
The Cross Country running race was held at Rockingham Lakes on Thursday the 22nd of the June. Students from Year 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to run a 1.3km track if they wished to participate. Everyone who went in the race earned points for their faction. Peel Language students made up a small percentage of the competitors running but we performed very well. In the year 3 boys we had 3 out of the top 5 finishers from Peel.
Tysen Bruce won the race with a fantastic run, just beating a strong competitor from Rockingham Lakes. Not far behind were Deegan Wood in 4th place and Anthony Daraz coming in 5th place. Congratulations boys and well done to all those who participated.
Room 3.3
Thanks to wonderful parents, room 3.3 was the class that brought in the most 10c and 5c coins! We have won the trophy twice in a row! Great work everyone!!
In 3.3 we have been learning about word processing. We are learning how to create new documents, type out recounts, insert boarders and images, edit our writing, and then save our work. We are hoping to create our own end of year book!
Pinjarra Campus
*** Students return to Campus on Tuesday 18th July 2017, Term 3 ***
This last week we have been very creative with craft and art in room 30. We have completed our collage work on ‘Features’ with Miss Jones and we are very pleased with the results. It has taken a lot of time and effort to create our work that is called “Mirror, Mirror”. We used different tearing and piecing techniques to create the pictures using recycled materials and things found in or environment.
Room 29 have been working on healthy eating and have explored recipe ideas and experienced baking and then writing about. We have been making healthy soup and pikelets. We have been learning about food groups, grains, vegetable, fruit, dairy and protien.
In Room 28, we have been learning about healthy food and how to keep safe. We have listened to the story of the gingerbread man and have written a recount of the story. We made pastry shapes of the gingerbread man. We have enjoyed baking muffins and eating them.
Paint Storm In Pinjarra
As part of Pinjarra Primary Schools ‘Positive Behaviour Support Program’ students from Room’s 28, 29 and 30 were fortunate enough to be able to join with their Pinjarra Primary School peers to attend an awe-inspiring paint storm performance.
Through a unique presentation of live speed painting, artist and performer Phil Doncon explained the importance of resilience. During his dynamic presentation of live speed painting, dramatic dance, humour and storytelling, students were entertained and informed about the importance of being resilient and never giving up on their dreams.
Students were able to see the artwork transform from its planning to completion stages and were even lucky enough to have the time to talk to the artist and have a photograph taken.
Our recent art experience with Phil Doncon was awesome! He taught us some amazing painting techniques this was accompanied with learning about Resilience. Room 30 were inspired to paint like Phil Doncon, it was a bit of a windy day, the paper was ripping off the fence and the pegs and paint were flying. The whole experience tested our resiliency skills; we came through with flying colours. We had lots of laughs and created many memories. We had a lot of fun facing the challenges of outside painting.
Goodbye Miss Jones
Fortunately for the students and staff at Peel Language Pinjarra, it’s not Goodbye Miss Jones, just see you later. Last Friday students at Pinjarra said goodbye to Miss Jones. It has been a wonderful learning journey of Science and Health for all students at Pinjarra campus under the caring guidance of Miss Jones. Miss Jones is retiring from teaching to pursue her own business. We thank her for her dedication, hard work and direction and wish her all the best with her career change. We look forward to seeing Miss Jones in a relief capacity at Pinjarra. We would also like to welcome Miss Claxton into her new role as she replaces Miss Jones in the classrooms.
Mandurah Campus
*** Students return to Campus on Tuesday 18th July 2017, Term 3 ***
At the Mandurah Primary School Campus, we have been super busy. We have started making our own garden. Room 11 has helped to put down stepping stones and then each class has started to put down their own plants in their section of the garden, with the fabulous Miss Murray.
Room 11 and Room 14 were lucky to have Vinny’s mum, Tarsh and Julia come in from Halls Head Veterinary Clinic to talk to the children. It was such a wonderful experience for the children and they all loved how interactive it was. We thank them both for taking the time to come and visit us and even let us keep some items for our play corner.
Mrs Devlin and Evan’s mum, Mrs Cherry has been working together to paint a NAIDOC banner in preparation for Naidoc week and Naidoc day on Friday the 21st of July. This is where there are going to be various activities running at a particular time in the day for the children to participate in. Some of these activities include making boomerangs, bracelets, cooking. Each class has contributed to the banner by getting their hands painted and writing their names underneath. We look forward to displaying this banner and joining in with the celebration.
On Friday the 30th of June (the last day) we have our NED reward day.
Bungaree Campus
*** Students return to Campus on Monday 17th July 2017, Term 3 ***
Bungaree Pizza Fractions
Room 1 and 2 have been learning about fractions of a shape and set of objects. We made paper pizzas and added our favourite toppings. Students had to work out the fraction of each topping.
We then were very lucky to make our very own mini pizza for lunch. We got to choose our own pizza sauce and toppings. Our teachers even made one too! They tasted delicious and everyone else in the school was jealous!!
