Principal’s Report

Welcome to week six of a busy and productive term one. I hope you all enjoyed the extra day with your families over the long weekend last week.

In this newsletter you will find information about school fees, NAPLAN 2019, School Banking, our Annual Happy Walk and the RLPS P & C AGM. We also hope you enjoy the Language Update and information from the school nurse.

Just a reminder to parents to update any changes to contact details with the front office. It is essential that we have up to date contact numbers in case of an emergency. If your child is on the bus, please alert them to any changes in the daily schedule along with a note to the class teacher in the Communication Book. Please be aware that we are only able to release your child to adults you have included on your contact list.

As you will be aware from the media, the State Government has released a Statement to address violence in schools. It sets out actions to help school staff, families and communities work together on this complex issue to ensure a safe environment for all. Further information can be found on the Department’s website:

https://www.education.wa.edu.au/

We will shortly be inviting you to an Individual Language Plan meeting with your child’s teacher and a Speech and Language Officer. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the goals and teaching strategies in your child’s Individual Language Plan. Please send an RSVP once you receive the letter or use the online booking system. We look forward to meeting with you to strengthen the quality partnerships we value with parents.

Term one 2019 is a busy term, with PLDS teachers visiting students who transitioned to their home school this year. Student information has been sent to schools and teachers will take a handover file of information for the 2019 teacher. We have also invited the exiting school teachers to attend Professional Learning at PLDS.

We have had exciting learning opportunities across our 4 campuses over the past two weeks. Mandurah students have been busy getting ready for the Community Breakfast today, while students at Bungaree have been focusing on Phonic sound. Our Pinjarra students have lots of fun at Crazy Hair Day last week, while the students in 1.3 at RLPS have been talking about feelings.

Voluntary contributions and charges are due by the end of term one. Fees sent in by the end of this term will go into the draw to win a prize at the junior assembly in term two.

Have an enjoyable fortnight and make the most of the warm weather.

NAPLAN 2019 Year 3 Students

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Year 3 students at Peel Language Development School are encouraged to complete the NAPLAN testing. It is carried out in a safe, non-threatening environment usually in their own classroom, supervised by their own teacher.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as Reading, Writing, Convention of Language and Numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year. The Reading, Convention of Language and Numeracy will be completed online and the Writing will be completed in paper copy.

Our Year 3 students will complete the tests over a 2 week period from the 14th May – 24th May (specific dates to be advised). More information can be found on the brochure attached.

Mandurah Campus

Staff and students have been super busy at Mandurah Primary School. We are getting ready for our Community Breakfast which will be held this week on Wednesday the 13th of March. We hope to see you all there from 8am!

School Photos are fast approaching! Our photo day is on Wednesday the 20th of March. Please keep an eye on your child’s communication folders for an envelope that will used to order your child’s photo’s. Kindy students will be able to come in on the day to have their photo taken with the class.

Room 18 are learning the story of the ‘The Little Red Hen.’ We have made our own hens and have had lots of fun retelling and acting out the story. We are learning to identify ‘who’ was in the story.

We are continuing to focus on the first six sounds taught as part of the ‘Jolly Phonics Program.’ Please make sure you come in and have a look at our awesome art work that links into our Phonics Program. We have made snakes for the ‘s’ sound, ants for the ‘a’ sound, parrots for the ‘p’ sound and tennis rackets for the ‘t’ sound. These sounds are being sent home as part of the home practice program, please check folders each night.

We are also busy learning our pre-writing formations as part of the ‘Peggy Lego’ Program. We have had lots of fun learning these movements by painting them onto the concrete, drawing in shaving foam, rolling them in playdough and lastly learning to make them with a crayon on paper. We have learnt ‘sideways, sideways,’ ‘tall man,’ ‘small man’ and ‘over the gate.’

Bungaree Campus

We have had a great start to year one and have settled in well at Bungaree. We have been practising our Jolly Phonics using the songs and hand actions. During our literacy block we have been using Jolly phonic to assist us with our spelling and writing and many other activities.

Our favourite game is sight word popcorn where we select a ball from the popcorn bucket and say or write the sight word that is on the ball. This has created a sense of team work as we often work together to help our friends learn the sight words.

Pinjarra Campus

At Pinjarra campus, we celebrated ‘Crazy Hair Day’ last week. Our Pre Primary students came with some fantastic creations on their heads!

We worked together to complete a very tricky building challenge. We were asked to try to create a strong structure using spaghetti and play dough. After some trials and experiments we discovered that the short pieces of spaghetti made stronger structures than the long pieces. We got to practise our language skills when explaining what we had tried and how we fixed any problems.

We are learning all about our ‘You Can Do It’ friends and how the skills they teach us can help us to work harder.

In writing, we have worked hard to master many of our pre-writing patterns and can even pick them out in some of the sounds we see when singing our Jolly Phonics songs.

We are looking forward to a wonderful term ahead of fun and learning!

RLPS Campus

1.3

The first 6 weeks have flown by in year 2 and we have all been working really hard on following instructions and setting up our class routines. To help us when we have been feeling sad, we read the story the Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Deisen. We had a big discussion about some of the things that we can do when we are feeling sad. We made a fish and wrote down three things that we could do to make ourselves feel happy. Here are some ideas we came up with to make us feel better.

Ally said “I can go and draw a picture.”
Tuaefe said “I can get a hug.”
Morrison said “I can go for a walk.”
Elora said “I can play with my friends.”
Hawi said “I can go on the slide with my friends.

Here is some of our work.

We have also begun working in our computer lab on Monday and Fridays. We get to use both the desk top computers and the laptops. During the week we also get to use iPads. During our computer time we have been practising using the mouse and learning how to type on the keyboard. We have also been playing sound and numbers games as well as completing challenges on Maths Prodigy. We all enjoy using the computers each week.

Fun with Language

Create a mystery box or bag with your child:

  • Place items from around the house in a pillowcase or cardboard box with a cut out big enough for your hand to reach into.
  • Take turns to reach in, chose an item, describe what you can feel and guess what the item is.
  • When describing the item you could talk about the size, shape, parts and what material you think it is made out of, etc.
  • You could also close your eyes to rely on the way the item feels.
  • Once a guess has been made, talk about whether the guess matches the clues

Immunisation information for parents

Immunisation programs in our community are designed to keep everyone well and safe, especially those people who are most at risk, such as babies.

Parents or legal guardians who make a conscious informed decision not to immunise their child should note the following:

  • In the case of a Measles or Pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak, Western Australian schools are required by the Department of Health, to exclude students who have not received the appropriate vaccination.

Please make sure your school-aged child is fully immunised and that you have provided a copy of the AIR immunisation record to the school.

Did you know that as parents you can ring the National registry or visit the website below to check out your child’s immunisation status? All you need is your Medicare number. Alternatively, phone 1800 653 809 or email air@humanservices.gov.au

https://www.humanservices.gov.au/

Kind regards
Leona Martin
