Principal’s Report

Welcome to the newsletter for week six, I hope you are enjoying the chance to go outside and enjoy the warmer weather.

The last two weeks have been exciting as we have had induction meetings to welcome our new 2019 families to our school sites at Rockingham Lakes, Pinjarra, Bungaree and Mandurah. I would like to thank our school P & C members and members of the School Board for attending and speaking to the incoming families. We look forward to positive partnerships over the coming years with you and your child.

As detailed in the last newsletter, PLDS has been shortlisted for the School of the Year category for the WAESSPA Awards 2018. This is an exciting achievement for our school and highlights our valuable contribution to education. We would also like to congratulate Mrs Fiona Forbes who has also been shortlisted for the Leadership Award 2018. Staff and Board members will be attending the awards ceremony on Friday night and we look forward to showcasing the highlights of our school and Outreach Service.

As our planning is underway for 2019 it's very important that parents let us know if you are considering moving schools next year. Could you please let main campus (9523 7830) know by this Friday 16th November if your child won't be attending PLDS in 2019. Could you also please let us know of any change of details for 2019 that need to be added to our data base.

There is information in this newsletter about swimming lessons at the RLPS campus, our amazing students at the interschool athletics, and our participation in the Count Us In day.

Exciting events are happening across our four campuses at the moment. The Pinjarra students are planning for their Aussie Christmas themed assembly. Congratulations to rooms 10 and 14 at Mandurah for their fantastic assembly. Bungaree students enjoyed their activities for Outdoor Play Day and RLPS students have told us about their exciting colour run and sports carnival.

Teachers and Speech Pathology staff are busy collaborating about reports and Individual Education Plans over the coming weeks. These will be posted to parents at the end of term along with samples of work completed by your children.

On behalf of the team at PLDS I would like to sincerely congratulate Mrs Lauren Hoath for attaining her Senior Teacher status. Lauren is an experienced and highly valued member of our staff and School Board.

Stay safe and well till next time.

Pinjarra Campus

Term 4 is certainly flying at full speed here at Pinjarra PLDS. With our first assembly presentation done and dusted, we are now busy rehearsing our Aussie Christmas themed second assembly fast approaching during week 7 on Thursday the 22nd of November. During weeks 4 & 5 we have celebrated and recognised some exciting school initiatives and celebrations.

On the 31st of October, rooms 28, 29 & 30 joined together and had lots of fun participating in some Halloween themed activities. Mrs Bellenger and Mrs Rose assisted the students in making some spooky and delicious ghost biscuits in room 28, Ms Claxton assisted the students in making some stretchy purple monster slime in room 29, and Ms Lewendon and Miss Knapp assisted the students in designing a pumpkin cardboard craft in room 30.

On the 1st of November, PLDS students joined with their host school to celebrate ‘Mathematics Week.’ In collaboration with ‘National Outdoor Classroom Day’ the students participated in a number of mathematic based activities out on the school basketball courts. Students threw addition basketballs, measured each other through chalk drawings and participated in timed activities. As well as participating in the mathematics rotations, students from Mrs Bellenger and Mrs Rose’s K/PP classroom participated in outdoor plant rubbings, chalk drawings wood work.

RLPS Campus

ECE 5

Term 4 is in full swing and it has been jam packed with lots of exciting things already! We started off the term with the whole school Colour Run. This was a huge success, very well run and the kids had an absolutely fantastic afternoon! We even had the local fire brigade there to help let the colours soak into the children’s white shirts. The following week was the Kindy/Pre-primary sports carnival. Another very successful and well run event combined with beautiful weather. Teachers, children and parents enjoyed the activities and were able to take part and cheer on other competitors throughout the carnival.

After such a busy start to the term we had a few weeks to knuckle down and get on with some serious “Year One” as it is our last term of Pre-Primary. The children are eagerly practising and preparing for ECE5 and PP4’s upcoming assembly at the end of Week 6 where we will be able to showcase our acting, dancing and singing talents. Then finally, to end the year off with a bang, the children will have swimming lessons down at Aqua Jetty for two weeks. This will be the children’s first lot of swimming lessons at school and the excitement is definitely building up for that already!

Interschool Athletics Carnival

This year’s Interschool Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday 31st October at Hourglass Reserve in Cooloongup. The combined Rockingham Lakes/Peel Language team took on students from Safety Bay, Port Kennedy and Charthouse. This year Peel Language had 5 students representing the school at the carnival and they were Aisea Tikoipau, Tamaroa Rakena, Inglis Tau Tamatoa, April Palele and Xzavier Reichardt. These students competed to the best of their abilities and were extremely well behaved on the day. The school is very proud of these students for their achievements. Rockingham Lakes ended up winning the tournament and taking home the shield.

Count Us In

Count Us In (MCUI) is Australia’s largest school music advocacy and participation program, growing in its reach and impact since 2007. In 2017 – over 660,000 kids from more than 3,000 schools learnt, rehearsed and performed the same song, at the same time, right across Australia. At 9:30am or 12:30AEST schools from around Australia including Peel Language Development School at the Rockingham Lakes Campus performed ‘One Song’. The song was written by 5 students from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland along with Justine Clarke (actress and performer).

Swimming Lessons for RLPS Campus

Swimming for RLPS Campus begin next week – Monday 19th November

Please remember students are to wear their bathers to school under their uniform, they will then get changed back at school after the completion of their lesson. Students will require a towel, goggles and thongs or sandals (to be worn to and from pool/ school)

Please clearly label ALL items.

Bungaree Campus

At Bungaree we also joined in on Outdoor Classroom Day to celebrate outdoor learning and play. The students were very excited, and it was a great opportunity for some creative and fun learning.

Rooms 1 and 2 have been learning about traditional Aboriginal art. As part of our learning we designed and painted our very own rock paintings. On Outdoor Classroom Day we took the opportunity to take our art outdoors. As well as enjoying the sun shine, students produced some wonderful rock art.

Room 3 enjoyed setting up their classroom outside for some in depth discussion about natural places. We brainstormed how plants grow and what we use them for. After we then collected natural objects and assessed the different textures of leaves. Using a rubbing technique, the students created beautiful and unique artworks.

Room 4 have been learning about constructed, natural and managed environments. We went for an explore of the school to look for these features in our own environment. We integrated technology and used the iPads to take photos of what we found. Room 4 had fun taking spelling outdoors and using chalk to practice our spelling words.

Mandurah Campus

Halfway through the term and we have been very busy at Mandurah Campus.

Students participated in the National Outdoor classroom day. Students had to find natural materials and create a wild character. Students wrote a description of their character to go with their artistic creation.

Room 10 and 14 performed a fantastic assembly item of ‘Pete the Cat Rocking in his School Shoes’. With matching red shoes and rocking guitars, these cool cat students learnt the entire story and song. We are very proud of the hard work they put in to their performance. This was also a special assembly for Phoenix Costello in Room 14 as he was presented Australian of the month award at the assembly by Deputy Principal Mr Garrett.

The Science Team

Welcome to Science!

This semester the Pre Primary teams have been working on daily and seasonal changes in our environment and how they affect everyday life.

One of the activities the students have enjoyed has been growing and harvesting herbs and vegetables in the garden, this has enabled a lot of observation and discussion about the weather, daily, weekly and the season and how this has affected the plants.

Three classes (D3, ECE5, PP4) will be going home with Herb Posies, an idea inspired by Pam England last year.

D2 have used Eco Grow pots, (Jiffy Pro from Bunnings) for the first time, to plants tomatoes seeds after the class had a discussion and a vote.

Room 28 in Pinjarra have been using Eco Grow pots(Jiffy Pro from Bunnings) all year and have had some great results!

Fun with Language

Create a mystery box or bag with your child:

  • Place items from around the house in a pillowcase or cardboard box with a cut out big enough for your hand to reach into.
  • Take turns to reach in, chose an item, describe what you can feel and guess what the item is.
  • When describing the item you could talk about the size, shape, parts and what material you think it is made out of, etc.
  • You could also close your eyes to rely on the way the item feels.
  • Once a guess has been made, talk about whether the guess matches the clues

Sun Safety

Enjoying the sun and outdoor play is a favourite pastime for Australian families. All family members should follow the 5 S’s to stay safe in the sun:

  • Slip on clothing that covers arms and legs
  • Slop on 50+ or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • Slap on a broad brimmed bucket or legionnaire hat
  • Seek shade
  • Slide on wraparound sunglasses

Children with an intellectual disability are at particular risk on hot days. Things to consider:

  • Offer drinks every 20 minutes.
  • Children who cannot move or change position by themselves may become sunburnt quickly.
  • Some medications cause heat intolerance and extra care is required to keep children cool.
  • Dress your child in loose fitting clothing so sweat can evaporate.
  • Children may not be able to communicate feeling unwell due to heat stress
  • Heat-induced seizures may occur.
