Principal’s Report

Welcome to the week four newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading about updates across our four campuses.

We would like to thank the P & C along with their busy band of volunteers for the many ways they help PLDS and RLPS throughout the school year. If you have a moment to assist with volunteer work, please let the P & C know.

I would also like to thank the School Board who met last Thursday, for their valuable contribution to our school and the work they do in our School Community. We welcome the discussion and feedback during the meetings as we continue to provide the highest level of teaching, learning and service to our communities.

Another thank you goes to the Outreach Team and PLDS school staff for welcoming teachers from our surrounding schools to workshadow and view the expertise within our Language School.

PLDS will once again be sending out the annual survey to parents. Your feedback is highly valued in our journey of school improvement and self-assessment. Parents will be able to access the survey online and further information will be sent out shortly.

Mrs Whelan will soon be inviting parents of exiting and year three students to Transition meetings across all sites. The purpose of the meetings will be to inform and assist parents with the transition of their children from PLDS to their mainstream school.

Mrs Murray has been busy preparing for Science Week next week and I’m sure students will enjoy retelling the activities to parents and caregivers.

The Edu-Life van will be visiting in week six for students to enjoy the valuable activities.

Our annual Topsy Turvy mornings were held across all sites last week. We ran information sessions for parents prior to the commencing the mornings. The Language Support Team spoke to the parents about supporting their child’s literacy in the home environment. Topsy Turvy morning is always an exciting opportunity to view classes in action and see students taking ownership of their learning. I would like to thank all PLDS Staff, parents, caregivers and students for coming along to make the morning a great success.

Pinjarra students have enjoyed celebrating 100 days of school with a yummy morning tea lots of activities using 100. Bungaree students thoroughly enjoyed teaching their parents at the Topsy Turvy morning and Mrs Stroud and Miss Klem presented an amazing assembly item at our Mandurah campus! At our RLPS students also enjoyed their role as teacher at the Topsy Turvy morning.

Could parents and caregivers please check that emergency contact numbers on file at PLDS are current and updated. It is vital that in the event of an emergency, we are able to contact a family member or delegate.

Please make sure that all items of clothing are named. As the weather hopefully begins to warm up in the coming weeks students will take off jumpers and jackets. As mentioned, the Sports Carnivals will be held this term so please make sure footwear is appropriate to join in active sports lessons.

Stay warm and enjoy the exciting and productive term.

Class photos re-shoot

As many of you are aware we had to get Kapture back to re-shoot our class photos. The first proofs of class photos did not make the students shine as the background and props were more prominent than the students. The Admin made a decision to get the company back - which they have done at no additional cost. We apologise that this has not been conveyed to you sooner, that was an oversight on our part. The photos that have been re-shot will be available shortly.

1.4

It has been a very busy start for Term 3 in Team 1.4. We have celebrated 100 Days of Schools by joining Room 1.5 in some amazing activities that centred around the number 100. One group had to use 100 pompoms to make an Indigenous design on a snake, our second group had 100 seconds to move as many M&M’s from one cup to another using only tweezers, the third group had to blow up 100 balloons and last but not least we got to come up with a design using 100 popsticks and playdoh. Although, we found some of the activities challenging it was wonderful to celebrate being 100 days of being in Year 2.

In Week 3, we had the pleasure of being the teacher for the morning and instructing our parents on some activities we do in the classroom. We had a fantastic time coaching parents on how to make slime with corn starch, shampoo and water on our Science activity table. Our parents were also challenged to sort words into adjectives and verbs on our Literacy station and to code Bee Bots to move around the mat to get to a specific location. On our mathematics station, we had to instruct our parents on how to sort chance statements under the headings of ‘certain’, ‘likely’, ‘unlikely’ and ‘impossible’ and to come up with their own statements to place under the headings.

It was amazing sharing our learning with our parents and having them in our classroom

Cross Country

The Cross Country running race was held at Rockingham Lakes on Thursday 26th of July. Students from year 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to run a 1.5km track if they wished to participate. Everyone who went in the race earned points for their faction. Peel Language students made up a small percentage of the competitors running but they performed very well. The year 3 boys saw three runners from Peel Language finish in the top ten. Tyler Jenkins finished 9th, Lachlan Clarke finished 4th and finishing in 3rd place was Levi Parsons. Well done boys. April Palelei also finished 9th out of the year 3 girls, which is a fantastic achievement.

Pinjarra Campus

The last few weeks at Pinjarra have certainly been busy and fun filled! We began Term 3 with a bang by celebrating 100 days of school, as well as joining with Pinjarra Primary to participate in ‘Crazy Hair Day.’ On Friday the 27th of July Mrs Bellenger, Ms Claxton and Miss Lewendon’s classes combined and parents were invited in for an afternoon tea and 100 second challenge reward afternoon. Students and parents participated in fun activities including the 100 second cup stacking challenging, 100 second staring competition and the 100 second star jump challenge, just to name a few! Thank you to all parents that attended and participated in our celebration.

During week 3 we joined with our host school Pinjarra Primary to participate in a range of activities and assemblies in order to celebrate NAIDOC week for 2018 and its theme ‘because of her, I can.’ The students enjoyed hearing dreamtime stories and the sounds of the didgeridoo, tasting delicious damper and kangaroo sausages, and watching a number of cultural dances and ceremonies.

Also in week 3 we had our annual ‘Topsy Turvy’ morning for parents. We had a wonderful turn out of parents. The students from each classroom really enjoyed the opportunity to showcase some of the learning experiences they participate in daily at school with their parents! Thank you to all those parents that were able to attend this year.

Bungaree Campus

Thank you to all those parents and caregivers who were able to attend our annual Topsy Turvy Day. It was a really fun morning as students got to teach their special person some of the activities that they do in class.

Mandurah Campus

We have had a busy week celebrating Topsy Turvy day and room 11 and 18’s assembly both of which had a great turnout of parents and family members.

We had a wonderful morning teaching our special people to learn. First we got our name tags, lanyards and ties and then we welcomed our parents. We directed our special people through the activities sharing our learning and deciding if our special person was good enough to have stickers. This delighted many of the children. There was a fun exciting atmosphere and the room was buzzing. We ended by teaching our parents the Jolly Phonics songs and actions and thanking them for coming.

After many hours and weeks of practice the day finally came to perform our Assembly. Miss Stroud and Miss Klem were crossing their fingers that the rain and wind would hold off for just long enough and luckily it did. The children came in wonderful outfits and they were ready! We performed the story ‘Edward the Emu’ and then a dance to ‘Keep On Moving’ by Five. The children produced an outstanding performance which was high energy and enthusiastic. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the children’s success.
