Principal’s Report

Welcome to week four of an already busy and productive term one.

I would like to thank parents and caregivers for coming along to the class meetings over the last few weeks. This is a valuable opportunity for parents to meet the teachers, hear about the quality teaching and learning programs, Home Practice and class expectations. We hope you have found the meetings informative and please feel welcome to make an appointment with your class teacher if you would like to discuss your child further.

Thanks also to parents who have updated contact details with the front office. It is essential that we have up to date contact numbers in case of an emergency. Please be aware that we are only able to release your child to adults you have included on your contact list. If your child is on the bus, please alert them to any changes in the daily schedule along with a note to the class teacher in the Communication Book.

Term one 2018 is a busy 11 week term, with PLDS teachers shortly visiting students who transitioned to their home school this year. Student information has been sent to schools and teachers will take a handover file of information for the 2018 teacher. We have also invited the exiting school teachers to attend Professional Learning at PLDS.

Our Speech and Language Team have been busy completing language assessments for teachers to write Individual Language Plans for every student at PLDS. We will invite parents to meet with us at the end of term one to discuss the language goals and strategies for your child. More information will be sent to you shortly.

The Outreach and TDS teams are already busy presenting Professional Learning to the teachers in our service areas. The valuable service offered from both teams ensures we are building the capacity of teachers in WA to support the language and literacy needs of students.

In this newsletter you will find updates from our four sites. The students at Pinjarra have been working with Ms Murray to join in ‘The Million Trees Program’ which will support replacing trees across WA. Students in 1.5 at our Rockingham Lakes campus have been immersing in language by investigating picture books and cooking some yummy food. At Mandurah our amazing teacher Mrs Mell Stroud has been liaising with Bunnings to create exciting play areas and Bungaree students are enjoying keeping fit with a whole school Morning Fitness program.

On behalf of Peel Language Development School I would like to welcome Board members for 2018 and look forward to your contribution to our school in our fourth year as an Independent Public School. I think we have grown in the positive way we work together and look forward to working with you in 2018 to implement the new Business Plan 2018-2020.

Voluntary contributions and charges are due by the end of term one. There will be more information to follow about the chance to win an exciting prize for fees sent in by the end of this term.

We would like to congratulate Mrs Tracey Buchanan for her amazing contribution to the Big Splash Arts Trail. Funds raised from this project will initiate innovative programs at Perth Children's Hospital for children and adolescents with severe mental health disorders who are at significant risk. Well done Tracey!

We would also like to congratulate Mrs Fiona Forbes who has been nominated for the Women in Achievement Award 2017. The Women of Achievement Award recognises a woman who demonstrates outstanding leadership and contributes to education throughout their career with the Department of Education. Finalists for the Department’s Women of Achievement Award will be recognised and the winner announced at the Department’s International Women’s Day Breakfast, at Crown Towers, on 8 March 2018. Best of luck to Mrs Forbes.

Important information for Parents

Peel Language Development School uses the Skoolbag App as a parent communication tool. The mobile app provides the school with an easy way to tell parents and carers, everything they need to know about school news, events calendar, cancellations, school notices, newsletters and much more.

Parents will also be able to use the App to complete the Change of Details eForm and the Absentee Note eForm.

To download from the Apple app store or the Google play store simply type Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre into the search bar.

Please note if using Skoolbag app you need to use the Peel Language Development School app even if your child is at an offsite campus.

Pinjarra Campus

Last Thursday we had the opportunity to meet our parents formally during the classroom parent information sessions. We had a wonderful turn out of parents, and would like to thank everybody involved for their attendance and support of our wonderful programs and classrooms here at Pinjarra PLDS.

This year Room 29 along with our resident science specialist Ms Nina Murray are coordinating the ‘Million Trees Program,’ which is a ‘Men of the Trees’ initiative that aims to provide schools with the facilities and support to practically address land degradation in Western Australia. We will primarily facilitate the growth of over 300 seedlings in our school shade house in which Ms Nina Murray will teach our students how to raise seedlings in a professional, hygienic manner simulating the work of a nursery. Students are involved in the entire process, from placing the seedlings and potting mix in the pots and finally to planting the seedlings into the wetland situated close to our school. We look forward to sending regular updates of our growing seedlings!

RLPS Campus

We have been working really hard in 1.5 and the students are enjoying getting back into learning. We have been reading lots of wonderful picture books, so far our favourite is ‘Triangle’ by Jon Klassen. We have been cooking all sorts of wonderful things that tie in with our whole school phonics approach that is Jolly Phonics.

Mandurah Campus

On Thursday the 15th of February, Bunnings Mandurah came to visit us and help us create an amazing mud kitchen, sandpit and a sensory garden for us all to use. We are excited to create rich and meaningful language experiences with these new additions and all the students are looking forward to using them. It was an extremely hot day but they persevered and we are so thankful for their hard work and determination. The whole school was buzzing and was so excited that their massive team was there and they loved talking to them.

Mandurah and Peel classes entered a ‘Design a bench’ competition and there were three winners announced along with many runners up. Hayley Collis was one of the winners and will be able to help create her design on to the bench. Congratulations Hayley!

We are extremely thankful to Bunnings Mandurah and we are looking forward to the opening day of the new store.

Room 10 Newsletter

Welcome back to the start of another wonderful year. Our class has settled in beautifully to their new routines and is busily at work. We are still getting to know one another and making lots of new friendships, which is wonderful to see. A big thank you to the parents that came to our class meeting. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet you all and to discuss the expectations and routines of our class for 2018. During the meeting I spoke about the Jolly Phonics program that we use to teach our sounds. A reminder to parents to please use the sound made by the letters not the letter name. This will help your child to consolidate their knowledge of the letter sounds and then to use this understanding to decode words when reading and also to sound out words when writing.

Home Practice will start this week so please check your child’s bag for this. If you have any questions do not hesitate to come and see me.

In class we have been learning our sounds. The Pre-Primary children have made some wonderful art and craft for the letters taught so far.

We have made ants for our ‘a’ sound.

We have made pink pigs
for our ‘p’ sound.

In narrative we are learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly and have created a piece of art work to show this. We will now focus on sequencing pictures in the correct order and using our sentences to explain what happens in each stage of the lifecycle. Make sure you pop into our class to see our awesome work!

We are looking forward to lots more fantastic learning this term!

Bungaree Campus

Every morning students at Bungaree have been participating in a whole-school Morning Fitness program.

The emphasis of the program is the development of fundamental movement and game skills aimed at fostering resilience, a level of wellbeing and an enjoyment of physical activity.

We are all having a fun time participating in rotational activities each morning. The physical exercise is not only good for our health, but is helping to stimulate students and get them ready for the day ahead.

The Science Team

The Science Team is very excited to announce that we will be making some worm habitats with some of the students...but only if we can get enough donations of 2L clear plastic bottles and 500ml water bottles with a lid!

Please please please instead of putting them in your recycle bin can you please give them to your child's teacher instead.

I would also like to thank Abbey in ECE5 for her donations of seeds!

They have been planted already and we are watching them with growing anticipation! The cauliflower is in the Pre Primary garden and the carrots are in the root viewer in ECE5.

Watch this space for updates!

Peel Language Development School would like to thank Ken and his Staff, at Reptile & Grow, for their fantastic help with organising Habitats for our Science program. Ken also donated mealworms for each class that is studying them.

Reptile & Grow are located at 117 Dixon Road, Rockingham t: (08) 9527 2245

School Dental Service

Dear Valued Parents/Carers/Guardians

We thank you for entrusting your local School Dental Service in looking after the Oral Health of your children.

We continue to provide free preventive and general dental treatment to all enrolled school students from pre-primary to the end of year 11. We are located at Endeavour Primary School. We are open Monday – Friday from 8am-4pm and also on some school holidays.

Enrolment forms will be sent out shortly for Pre Primary and new students to the school. Please complete the enrolment forms and return to the school at your earliest convenience.

It is the parent’s responsibility to bring your child to their dental appointment. This is because we require you to update medical information, discuss treatment requirements, treatment plans and complete necessary documentation.

The Big Splash WA

The Big Splash WA is a vibrant art event that will take place in the streets, parks and public spaces of Perth and surrounds from January 20th to March 4th 2018.

A huge pod of wildly colourful dolphin sculptures painted by local artists will swim into town as part of a mass public art exhibition to raise awareness and valuable funds for the Perth Children’s Hospital, Child and Adolescent Mental Health unit.

Funds raised will initiate innovative programs at Perth Children's Hospital for children and adolescents with severe mental health disorders who are at significant risk.

In addition to the public art trail, The Big Splash WA campaign includes a school based education program that aims to encourage conversations around mental health and well-being for children and young people.

Local artist and staff member of PLDS has created a wonderful sculpture called ‘Octopus Embrace’. We are very proud of the wonderful work Tracey has done.
