Principal’s Report

Welcome to the newsletter for week six, we hope you enjoy reading about the exciting events happening across all PLDS sites.

Our schools are looking forward to celebrating Book Week. Part of the celebrations will include the ‘Books on Blankets’ session tomorrow at RLPS campus. Notes have been sent home and we look forward to parents sharing this great literacy event with us. Thank you to parents and caregivers for supporting this community event and assisting your children to dress as a book character.

Classes at PLDS have been busy preparing and hosting our annual Topsy Turvy morning. This is still running across some campuses but has been a great success so far.  Students have thoroughly enjoyed being the teacher for the morning and consolidating their learning in such an enjoyable way. Thank you to parents who were able to attend. We also offered parents the opportunity to fill out the PLDS Parent Survey online or via a paper copy. Parents still have opportunity to complete the survey and your feedback is highly valued in our journey of school improvement. The link to the online survey is noted below in the newsletter.

I would like to sincerely thank members of our School Board who were able to attend the Topsy Turvy mornings, assist with the survey and talk to parents about the Board and its role in our school.

We continue our warm welcome to parents and community members at PLDS with the annual Open Nights at most campuses. Please check the calendar for the dates and more information will be sent out shortly. At our Rockingham Lakes campus the Open Night will include a chance to view the fantastic Artacular exhibition in the Resource Room as well as the chance to view classes and chat to the teachers.

We are currently in the process of holding Transition meetings across all sites. The meetings are an opportunity to find out about the Transition process for 2017 and 2018. This is a positive experience for all students and we ask that parents support their children’s transition from PLDS into their return to their mainstream school. We would like to ask that parents who are intending to leave PLDS for various reasons, other than our normal exiting process, to please phone or write to us about your intention as soon as possible.

I would like to thank the RLPS campus P & C and its tireless band of volunteers for organising the Father’s Day stall next Friday. This is a good opportunity for children to purchase small gifts and help with fund raising.

Our students and teachers have been busy across all sites with Bungaree reading about Wombat Stew, RLPS campus learning about Minibeasts and Mandurah and Pinjarra celebrating Book Week.

Could parents and caregivers please check that emergency contact numbers on file at PLDS are current and updated. It is vital that in the event of an emergency, we are able to contact a family member or delegate.

Please make sure that all items of clothing are named. As the weather begins to warm up in the coming weeks students will take off jumpers and jackets. The Sports Carnivals will be held this term, so please make sure footwear is appropriate to join in active sports lessons.

Stay warm and enjoy the exciting and productive term.

Fathers Day Stall

Fathers Day Stall will be held next Thursday 31/8 and Friday 1/9. More information will go onto the Skoolbag App.

ECE 3

In Pre-Primary we have been very busy learning all about minibeasts. We investigated caterpillars and looked at what they like to eat. We went on a caterpillar hunt in the garden, we found 5 caterpillars and kept them in class for a few days so we could watch what they do.

“They like to eat nice green leaves”Ally

“Caterpillars make a house called a cocoon then they are a butterfly!”- Elora

We have been reading the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar By Eric Carle. We have painted, coloured, read books and written stories about caterpillars. We especially love using the story path to help us retell the story.

Last Friday was our Pre-Primary assembly. We decided to share the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar with everyone. Everybody did a fantastic job at learning their lines and we looked amazing standing up the front. After assembly we had a special Hungry Caterpillar party. We made fruit kebabs and got to eat caterpillar cupcakes, Swiss cheese, pickles and salami.

Pinjarra Campus

Fathers Day Stall

The Fathers Day Stall for our Pinjarra PLDS students will be held on Thursday 31st August. A great range of gifts will be available, including gifts for Grandad. Prices range between $1 and $10 each.

Book Week

This fortnight we dressed as a character from a favourite book for Book Week. We had Bob the Builder, Robin Hood, Jessie the Cowgirl, Spiderman, Harry Potter, Snow White, Ninja Turtles, Racing Car Driver, Matilda, Sam, Darth Vader and Wally. It was lovely to witness children share their favourite stories and characters.

All the teachers dressed as the 7 dwarfs from the story Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Ms Rose was Dopey, Ms Smith was Grumpy, Ms Glass was Sneezy, Ms Claxton was Sleepy, Mrs Cudby was Bashful, Mrs Telford was Happy and Mrs Kremerskothen was Doc. For the record, Mrs Telford and Mrs Kremerskothen have pillows under their tops! We promise it was a pillow, and not all extra donuts at lunch time. A huge thank you to Ms Rose – for working so hard on perfecting our outfits.

Room 28

In Room 28, the Kindy and Preprimary class, we have been learning about community helpers. Community helpers are all different people that do all different jobs. In class we have been learning about what jobs people do, as well as the special tools they use (such as doctors and vets using a stethoscope) as well as what special clothing they wear (such as a thick jacket for fire fighters). We decided what jobs we would like to have when we grow up – but you will have to come and visit our class to find out!

During our art time we have been looking at body movement based art. We can use our bodies to create big movements of colour and patterns. You might even see us drawing under the table! (We promise we used paper – and didn’t draw on the table). During this time, we use art to help us develop our big and small (gross and fine motor) muscles.

During our maths, we are practicing our counting, writing and ordering numbers. The Kindys have been reviewing numbers to 5, as well as ordering, writing and counting all the way up to 10. During first semester, the Pre Primaries practiced numbers to 10, this semester we are practicing counting all the way to up to 100 (although we aren’t expected to remember these big numbers until next year).

During our English time we have gone right back to basics with our pre-writing letter formation using Peggy Lego’s letter patterns. Fluent and confident handwriting enables us to share our ideas more confidently when drawing and writing. During our phonics time we are reviewing the single sounds before we begin to focus on two-lettered sounds, diagraphs, later in the term.

We look forward to showcasing our wonderful work during our Topsy Turvy morning, this Thursday 9:00-10:00am. Please come along for a glimpse into the wonderful world of Pinjarra Room 28.

Bungaree Campus

Rooms 1 and 2

This term, room’s 1 and 2 at Bungaree have been reading the book ‘Wombat Stew’. We have learnt lots of different things from this story such as rhyme and rhythm, Australian animals, information reports, team work and that most stories have an introduction, problem and solution. Who know we could learn so many things from one book!

This week we had the opportunity to run the school assembly and perform a play based on the book ‘Wombat Stew’. All students did a fantastic job remembering their lines and actions. Well done to everyone for your outstanding performance and successful assembly item.

Mandurah Campus

** Please remember the Faction carnival is next Thursday the 31st of August **

Room 18

This week we have been celebrating book week the theme is Escape to Everywhere. We have spent the week reading our favourite stories, identifying who is in the story and where is it set. Our favourite stories in Room 18 and The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Pete the Cat . The children dressed as a book character on Wednesday and will complete activities around our favourite stories on Friday. At Mandurah we also have the Unique reading challenge where students take a photo of themselves reading in a unique place. We went on an adventure around the school to find unusual places to read our stories the children came up with some very adventurous ideas.

This week we have Topsy Turvey Day thank you to all the parents that were able to participate. The children loved sharing their knowledge with their parents and their excitement was palpable in the room. The children taught their parents how to move through our rotations and of course how to use the smart board. The parents enjoyed being taught by their child for the day and the children certainly enjoyed being the teacher!

Peel Science Shout Out

Welcome to PLDS Gardening!

This term the Science team are working on Physical Science but as you can see we are also still working in the gardens!

I wanted to share with you some of the successes we have had in Science recently!

Bungaree now has a space for gardening, it's like an outside room! The students have come up with a plethora of ideas for it already :)

Mandurah have all made milk bottle monsters so that they could take home a geranium plant before the main plant is removed for more PLDS gardening.

Thanks to Emma who had the idea of turning the bottles into monsters, don't they look amazing!

Rockingham Lakes has had a fantastic harvest of curly carrots, watermelon radishes and black radishes!

Thanks to ECE 5 for their careful tending of the carrots.

ECE5 ECE3 and D2 have all cared for the radishes and done a great job!

The Science Team xx
