Principal’s Report
Welcome to week eight of term three as we continue to celebrate learning across all campuses.
Last week our school celebrated Book Week across all campuses. Part of the celebration at RLPS included the ‘Books on Blankets’ session. Staff and families showed great support for the community event supporting literacy in our school and community.
The annual Topsy Turvy morning was once again a great success across all campuses enabling students to teach family members for the day and further consolidate their literacy skills. Parents were offered the opportunity to fill out the annual survey online or via a paper copy whilst at school. I would like to thank the Board members who were able to attend the morning and meet the parents. The Board also promoted filling out the survey and the value of targeted feedback in our journey of school improvement.
PLDS has received the final report from the IPS Review panel. The findings in the report were very favourable detailing the nurturing and inclusive learning opportunities provided for our children, along with the positive environment of the school community. The report will be tabled at the Board meeting and available for public viewing via the school website shortly. We will welcome the discussion and feedback as we continue to provide the highest level of teaching, learning and service to our communities.
Last Friday the Peron South Cell celebrated the Excellence in Education Awards. This was the first year of giving the annual awards and the initiative was a great success. Staff members were nominated by their peers and the final recipients were also decided by their peers. On behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate Justine Daly and Nina Murray for winning the teaching award and Karen Baines for winning the school support staff award.
We are currently working with families to provide support with the transition process across all sites. PLDS teachers are meeting with parents of exiting students to set priority goals for to focus on for the rest of 2017.
Open nights will be happening across all sites giving parents further opportunities to view their children’s classes and chat to the teachers and support staff. This will also be a great opportunity for Board members to network. The exciting opening of the Artacular exhibition will take place on Open Night at RLPS campus. Art work from all PLDS students will be on display. I would like to thank Ms Hirsiger for her tireless work in coordinating the exhibition, along with staff who helped her and students who created fine works of art.
As well as celebrating Open Nights and Topsy Turvy across all campuses Pinjarra PS celebrated Daffodil Day on August 25th and raised money for the Cancer Council. We have the sports carnivals happening soon and Mandurah have been working with Bunnings to make Father’s Day gifts!
Enjoy the sunshine and have a safe and happy weekend.
Pinjarra Campus
Room 30
Another successful Topsy Turvy day was held at the Pinjarra campus on Thursday 24th August. Thank you to all parents and staff members who transformed into safe, respectful and successful students for this annual event.
All successful school events come from planning and collaboration. Teachers in room 30 are pictured conducting a staff meeting prior to the extremely important part of any day, greeting their students.
Once inside it was time to begin the day’s activities. With daily writing, reading to the teacher, math, procedure writing, science, cooking and working on the class puzzle, the students were extremely busy. The students also conducted themselves exquisitely; they were exceptionally well behaved and worked hard earning themselves many class Dojo reward points and a prize from the prize box.

Daffodil Day
Staff and students joined together on Friday August 25th and turned Pinjarra Primary school yellow. The school managed to raise an amazing $708.00 to support the Cancer councils annual daffodil day. It was fantastic to see so many people supporting this worthwhile cause.

Sports Carnival 2017
This years Kindy and Pre Primary Sports Carnival will be held on Wednesday 20th September. It will take place between lunch and recess, which is 11:30-1:30, after which parents are invited to stay and spend lunch with their child’s class.
The carnival gives the students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and athletic ability. We will begin with a running race over 50m and then from there move into the team games. The team games are based around fundamental movement skills that the students have been working so hard on improving throughout the year. The games encourage team work, fair play and good sportsmanship.
On the day, students are encouraged to wear their faction colours to show off their team spirit. Also, a hat, a water bottle and sneakers to run in will be needed. It is going to be a day full of fun and laughter and we want every student to leave with a sense of achievement and being a valued faction member. So please come down to support and cheer on all of the competitors.
Hope to see you there.

D3
This term in D3 we have been learning about insects and minibeasts. We have been learning about the bee, the dragon fly, ladybugs and butterflies.
When describing insects Jack said ‘insects have 2 antennae and a head and a thorax and an abdomen and 6 legs.’
For our assembly item we all dressed up as insects and we sang 2 songs about insects and minibeasts and we did such an amazing job! We all spoke beautifully and we enjoyed singing the songs and doing the actions!
We have been writing about bees in our bee books and learning about the life of a bee. We have learnt that there are 10 different types of bees and each bee has a different job to do in the hive. We also got to have a look at a real bee hive and see some honey in the hive. Everyone had a taste of the honey but not everyone liked it!
Beau said ‘bees can sting you and they can fly around’
Tyson said ‘bees can fly and they can make honey and they live in a hive’
Armani said ‘dragonflies can fly. They have 4 wings just like a butterfly’
Caleb said ‘butterflies fly around and have lots of colours.’
We have been doing lots of reading, writing and craft activities on insects! Have a look at some of the wonderful work that we have produced! We have enjoyed learning about insects and minibeasts this term!
Bungaree Campus
We have had a massive few weeks at the Bungaree site!
We had a great turn out of parents and carers for Topsy Turvy Day where students took pride in showing their families all the wonderful work they have been completing. They also had an awesome time being little teachers to their parents and carers. It was a successful morning followed by a lovely morning tea.
The students and the teachers at Bungaree also had a fantastic dress up day to celebrate Book Week 2017. Many students put a lot of thought into the costumes they wore for the day.
Mandurah Campus
The students at Mandurah have been budding builders in the lead up to Father’s Day. During the week we had a visitor from Bunnings who taught the class how to make wooden tool boxes that they could give to someone special. Everyone had lots of noisy fun hammering their boxes together, then we had a great time painting and decorating them.
Room 14 designed some fantastic Father’s Day cards. Everyone painted a picture of their dad for the cover of the card and then made a drawing of something special they like to do with their dad. Students were then engaged in purposeful writing about what they loved about their dad. With a bit of assistance all the children wrapped their presents and they were ready to take home.
On Wednesday the 30th of August 2017, Malcom from the Rotary Club introduced Room 11 and Room 14 to James Foley. James Foley grew up in Fremantle and has written and illustrated a variety of different books. He was kind enough to read us his story ‘In the lion’ and even drew us our very own pictures to his book. He spoke to everyone about his new book ‘Dungzilla’, which everyone was excited about. It was an amazing experience and all the students were laughing so much!

Mandurah Sports Carnival
On Thursday the 30th August Mandurah Campus held their Sports Carnival. The rain thankfully held off enough so that the day could go ahead. The students arrived wearing their faction colours creating a sea of red, blue and green. The students were kept busy all day rotating through many events such as jumps, throws, sprints, team games and novelty games. Hall (green faction) was dominant and ended up victorious at the end of the day.
The students from Peel Language tried their best and never gave up as they competed to their full potential. Although they were exhausted at the end of the day, they all had a lot of fun. Peel Language was well represented during the presentations. April Palelei was year 2 champion girl, Nathaniel Nawanawa was year 2 champion boy and Kaitlyn Titmus was year 3 runner-up champion girl. Well done to our champions and well done to all who competed.

How much physical activity should my child be doing?
School age children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. But more is better, so encourage your child to be active for up to several hours each day.
Children need a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. ‘Moderate activity’ is any activity which is similar in intensity to a brisk walk e.g. bike riding or active playing. ‘Vigorous activity’ is any activity which makes your child “huff and puff” e.g. organised sports, ballet, running or swimming laps.
Any activity that requires your child to expend energy should be encouraged. Go to the raising children website for more information.
