Principal’s Report
Welcome to week six of what is continuing to be a productive term of learning. Teachers are busy completing final assessments and writing reports and we have seen some fantastic student work over the past two weeks.
As the weather is moving into the winter months we are seeing students with sniffles and colds. We will ensure good hygiene practices continue at school and would like your continued assistance with letting your child rest at home if they are sick.
We hope the children who attended the disco at RLPS in week four had lots of fun. I would like to thank the P & C along with the valued volunteers for their hard work in making the event run smoothly.
Also at our RLPS campus, the winner of the Bike will be announced by Mr Paul Papalia, CSC MLA Member for Warnbro at the next Junior assembly on Friday 2nd June.
It was National Simultaneous Story time on Wednesday the 24th of May, when schools from all over Australia read the same book at the same time. This year the book was The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood. We hope you all enjoyed the event across all campuses!
At our Bungaree campus the lucky students attended a wildlife presentation from AusArk where they learned about animals in the wild. There are some exciting photos in this newsletter.
Please note the information in this newsletter and on the Skoolbag App about fidget spinners remaining at home.
The Annual PLDS Open Day will be held on the 12th June. The purpose of the Open Day is to inform members of the community about the service we offer at PLDS. We are trialling a new format this year where parents and carers are attending in the morning and a Professionals Afternoon Tea will be held later in the day.
As part of the self-assessment we complete as an IPS, PLDS received a visit from the National Quality Standards team last week to audit and verify the valuable work we do at our school. Our verification report was very positive indicating that we are meeting almost all Quality Areas. The reviewers wrote that, ‘The interaction between all staff and each child is warm and responsive and it is obvious that trusting relationships are firmly embedded across the school. Each child is treated as an individual and encouraged in all interactions. Children are able to meaningfully engage with educators.’
Members of the School Board attended Independent Public School Board Training last week as part of the self-assessment we complete as an IPS. The training was a valuable opportunity to reflect on our school and Board processes and plan for the next IPS cycle of 2018 – 2020.
The PLDS school website has been updated to better enable the PLDS team to keep the information up to date. The website will be live next week for members of the public to access information.
We hope you enjoy the long weekend to come and are able to spend some time outside in the lovely sunny weather.

Fidget Spinners
In line with our policy of not bringing toys to school, fidget spinners are not to be brought to school unless they are part of a signed and documented Education Plan.
We thank you for your assistance and support.
Bungaree Campus
On Wednesday the 24th May Rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4 at Bungaree came together to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime 2017. We all had loads of fun listening to the story ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood. Students were very entertained by the antics of the cow but were also able to make connections to the book themes of Perseverance, Friendship and Triumph.
It was really rewarding to hear students relate these themes to the ‘You Can Do It’ program. Everyone agreed that we should always persevere until we achieve our goal and that it is important to build our friends up and encourage them to have a go at challenging task. What an awesome group of students we have at Bungaree!
Room 4
On the 19th May 2017 the students at Bungaree in Room 4 were lucky enough to attend a wildlife presentation from AusArk. The students learnt all about how to care for native Australian animals and how they can adapt their own backyard to care for wild animals. They were given the opportunity to hold a snake, blue tongue lizard, stick insect, dog, native rat and rabbit. They had a fantastic time and we can’t wait until next time!
Thank you to all the parents who attended the wildlife presentation and have assisted during parent help in room 4. If you would like to assist in the classroom please let the teacher know and we can arrange a time. Everyone is welcome and we would love to have your assistance. Miss Rudland and Mrs Tocco
Mandurah Campus
National Simultaneous Story Time
Room 11 and Room 14 from Peel Language Development School- Mandurah participated in the National Simultaneous Story time at the Senior Centre. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously all around Australia. This year it was The Cow Tripped Over the Moon written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
It was such a rewarding opportunity with the focus on literacy and reading in particular. The children walked down to the Senior Centre, listened to the Mayor of Mandurah read the story, completed craft activities and then ate morning tea with some of the Seniors from the centre. The children were so happy and loved every minute of it and at the end we were presented with the book to keep at Mandurah and got to do some rhyming songs together.

Rooms 18 and 10 also participated at school, watching the story being read on the smart board.
Pinjarra Campus
Pinjarra children had an enjoyable week leading up to mother’s day making a flower pot and flowers using die cut shapes that Miss Jones had produced. All classes also made a 3D bouquet. There was such a hive of activity and excitement, every student had a go and created some very lovely original works of art. This was also Lizzie’s last day and students lined up to shake hands and exchange hugs wishing Lizzie well for her move to her new school.
Our current focus is working on eating healthy this week, we are looking at making vegetable soup.
RLPS Campus
Room 3.4
It was National Simultaneous Story time on Wednesday the 24th of May, when schools from all over Australia read the same book at the same time. This year the book was The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood. Oscar, Iantha, Kaleb, Sam, Cooper, Tysen, Dylan and Rayan from 3.4 read the story out loud to a wonderful audience made of students from D2, D3, 1.4, 3.3 and 3.4. The story is a very funny book about how a cow wants to jump over the moon. After a few funny false starts she jumps over the moon in the end with the help of her friends. Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun!
Room D1
This term in D1, we have been exploring how daily life of the present is different from that of the past. We have begun to learn about how many aspects of our lives have changed from the childhoods of our parents and grandparents. Last week we were lucky enough examine some toys from nearly 70 years ago! The first thing we observed was how old they looked! We noticed that the teddy bear had many holes and wasn’t fluffy; while the toy sewing machine was rusty and the parts did not move anymore. We then brainstormed our favourite toys as a group; fidget spinners and ipads are the most popular!
This week we are identifying different modes of transport and how they are used. We started by testing our knowledge of modes of transport with a ‘Guess that Sound’ game. We then conducted a class survey on the types of transport our families use in a week and recorded these on the whiteboard. Using this information we could see that cars and buses were the most popular modes of transport in D1. We then drew pictures and labelled the types of transport that our families use and how we use them. We are looking forward to next week when we explore how transport has changed over time!

Science
Welcome to Term Two Science!
I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated shoe boxes and 2L milk bottles so far! Please keep them coming!
The shoe boxes will be used at a later date however the milk bottles have all been turned into watering cans for the students to use!
Rockingham Lakes Pre Primary students enjoy watering the garden, when needed, and are taking pride in their efforts. They have recently harvested silver beet, cherry tomatoes, mint and parsley and are also growing sage, marjoram, sweet potatoes, more tomatoes, beetroot, carrots, two types of radishes plus sunflowers and nasturtiums.
Thank you to everyone who donated seeds to the Pre Primary garden, they are greatly appreciated. A special thank you to Mrs P for donating extra tomato plants and to Mrs Batomalaque for donating two Sweet Potato plants after our pumpkins all died. As Mrs Batomalaque predicted, a pumpkin plant sprouted again so we are hopeful that more will follow!
We are planning to plant some strawberries soon, but we need a hanging basket (or two) so that we can make the most of the space in our garden. If anyone has a hanging basket, liner or hay spare that they could donate that would be wonderful? We would also like any empty, 1kg yoghurt pots to plant our mint in. So if you have any lying around at home, please send them in! Thank you in advance. I’m sure the students will really look forward to putting these together and watching the strawberries and mint grow.
Constable Care
Through puppet theatre and live interactive performances, the Constable Care team of professional actors address a range of personal safety, community safety and citizenship themes to excite, engage, challenge and educate children from two to twelve years of age.
The students watched a play called ‘Fun Scary’, where Timmy, Teagan and Sarge the dog are at the park enjoying a beautiful afternoon. They get butterflies in their tummies as they zoom down the big slide and their hearts pound with excitement playing chasey. They realise that it can be pretty fun to feel a little scared, but not always. There’s a difference between fun-scary and bad-scary. Timmy and Teagan learn that there is always a safe person to talk to about the bad-scary stuff.
