Principal’s Report
Welcome to the last newsletter for term one. This has been a busy and productive term and I would like to sincerely thank all parents and caregivers for helping your child settle into the school year and celebrate the progress they have made.
Thanks to parents who have updated contact details with the front office. It is essential that we have up to date contact numbers in case of an emergency. Please be aware that we are only able to release your child to adults you have included on your contact list. If your child is on the bus, please alert them to any changes in the daily schedule along with a note to the class teacher in the Communication Book.
PLDS teachers have completed transition visits to schools of our exited students. Student information was sent to schools and teachers shared a handover file of information for the 2017 teacher. We invited the exiting school teachers to attend Professional Learning at PLDS with schools taking up the offer and attending the many Professional learning opportunities offered by PLDS and the Outreach Team.
Our Speech and Language Team along with teachers have completed language assessments with students and collaborated to write Individual Language Plans for every student at PLDS. We are currently meeting with parents to discuss the language goals and strategies for your children. Thank you to those parents who have taken the opportunity to attend the valuable meetings to build your knowledge of your child’s education. We have provided extra meeting times for parents who were unable to attend.
The Outreach and TDS teams continue planning and presenting Professional Learning to the teachers in our service areas. The valuable service offered from both teams ensures we are building the capacity of teachers in WA to support the language and literacy needs of students.
In this newsletter you will find updates from our four sites. The students at Pinjarra have been involved in a technology project creating Easter hats themed around a Mem Fox book, ‘The Magic Hat’. The students from Mandurah have been having lots of fun celebrating Harmony Day and rooms 11 and 14 attended Peel Zoo to compliment their learning of zoo animals. Our Bungaree students have been exploring Chemical Science looking at mixtures and solids and liquids and our pre primary students at the RLPS Campus had a visit from the Rockingham Fire Station to learn all about fire fighters and fire trucks.
Voluntary contributions and charges are due by the end of term one. There will be more information in term two about the draw to win an exciting prize for fees sent in by the end of this term.
On behalf of PLDS I would like to congratulate Mrs Jenny-Lee Fussell on winning the position of Manager of Corporate Services. Mrs Fussell will be a valuable addition to the team at PLDS.
On behalf of Peel Language Development School I would like to welcome new Board members for 2017 and look forward to your contribution to our school in our third year as an Independent Public School.
Peel Language Development School would like to congratulate the P & C office bearers for 2017 and we look forward to continuing to build positive and productive partnerships. We thank you for the valuable work you do at the RLPS campus.
Have a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to exciting learning opportunities in term two.

Mandurah Campus
** Please note, first day back at school for Mandurah campus is Wednesday 26th April **
All of students at the Mandurah Campus celebrated Harmony Day on the 21st of March. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.
The children got to wear orange accessories and some of us had special visitors coming into our classrooms that painted rainbows on their faces. All the children were given oranges and carrots donated from the Spud Shed.
There were lots of amazing Harmony Day activities and we have a few photos to share with you. Room 11 and room 18 even made their own special orange and carrot juice. We loved learning about Harmony Day and enjoyed our Harmony Day celebrations.

Peel Zoo – Room 11 and 14
On Tuesday the 28th of March the children in room 11 and room 14 at the Mandurah campus went to visit Peel Zoo. The students were all very excited as they had been learning all about zoo animals to improve their semantic knowledge.
We had three parent helpers: Mrs Cherry, Mr Radford and Mrs Titmus who did an amazing job walking around with their group. We got to see all of the animals and even learn more about them with the help of the zoo keeper, Bronte.
Bronte showed us a blue tongue lizard and two snakes. The children were all so brave that each student even held it around their own neck (the teachers didn’t volunteer). We were so proud of everyone in room 11 and room 14.

Science
Welcome to Chemical Science at Bungaree!
This term the Science team have been working on Spot the Difference and All Mixed Up in Science.
Here are some of the activities the students have enjoyed.
During ‘All Mixed Up’ the students have been working with mixtures of solids and liquids. They have been working in small groups to investigate whether they could be separated.
Some mixtures can and some cannot and they have to explain why / why not. Each activity had a set of questions that each group had to investigate, discuss and answer.
During ‘Spot the Difference’ students have been working with a variety of materials, exploring their properties using their senses and discovering how they can change. They are always asked what has changed, what has stayed the same and why? Each activity requires students to answer using descriptive language generated by the students.
We hope you have enjoyed hearing about our exciting Science here at Bungaree!

ECE3
In Pre-Primary we have been learning all about people who help us. We were lucky enough to have four firefighters from the Rockingham Fire Station come and visit us. They began by talking about what they do and some things that can cause fires. Then they showed us what they wear to protect themselves when fighting a fire. After this we all went to the oval to see the firetruck and tender. We all had a turn of squirting the water and sitting in the firetruck! In class we turned our home corner into a fire station. We all helped to make a fire engine and have spent lots of time pretending to put out fires. We have had so much fun learning about people who help us in our community.

Cricket Clinic
Last week we were lucky enough to have a WACA representative come and take some of our classes after our excursion to the famous cricket ground. On Tuesday Jacob and Brodie took some classes at the Rockingham Lakes site, teaching them throwing, catching, bowling and batting.
On Wednesday, Jacob was able to join us again at our Pinjarra and Mandurah sites for more cricket lessons. The students thoroughly enjoyed the cricket-based activities and games.
Harmony Day
Harmony Day 21st March is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.
Rockingham Lakes Campus celebrated Harmony Day by dressing in orange and doing a ‘Happy Walk’ on Friday 24th March. The whole school participated as students walked, ran and danced their way around the school as many times as they could. The event went from 12:00 till 1:00 with many parents participating to show their support. The students were exhausted at the end of it but they had a great time.
Library
The library ladies would like to thank the lovely Mums who have kindly donated beautiful new books for our schools.

Colds
Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:
- Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.
- Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
- Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
- Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
- Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
- Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.
What to do if your child gets a cold
No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest: This need not be in bed.
- Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or iceblocks to suck for older children.

Workshops
KEYS in partnership with the City of Cockburn and Meerilinga have been successful in gaining funding to deliver evidence based and evidence informed parenting workshops for free or at low cost to families living in the Rockingham and Kwinana communities. Currently KEYS are looking at delivering the parenting workshops within schools. If you are interested in KEYS holding a parenting workshop at a facility within your school please contact Christine at KEYS on 9439 1838 or via email christine.patton@keyswa.org
Examples of the workshops we can deliver are:
Circle of Security: An early intervention workshop for parents and carers that concentrates on the relationships which give children emotional support. Our trained Facilitators work with parents and care-givers to help them to:
- Understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read emotional needs
- Support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions
- Enhance the development of their child's self esteem
1-2-3 Magic & Emotional Coaching: A parenting workshop which gives parents and caregivers a simple and effective approach to discipline in 2 - 12 year olds. It provides parents with the knowledge and practical skills to set limits confidently and calmly and when required, the ability to follow through with reasonable consequences.
Triple P- Positive Parenting Program: A Positive Parenting Program aims to equip parents with the skills and confidence they need to be self-sufficient in managing behaviour issues. It also aims to strengthen positive relationships, attitudes and conduct.
