Principal’s Report
Welcome to week 10 of a very successful, action packed term three.
I hope you all managed to come to our main campus to view the Artacular exhibition. The artwork looked fantastic and the Resource Room was transformed into an amazing display of a wide variety of artworks and activities. A big thanks to Miss Power, Mrs Wolstonhome and their team of helpers for the mammoth effort in planning, coordinating, setting up and taking down the display. It highlighted that we have some very talented artists in our schools.
We hope you were able to attend the Open Night onsite to talk to teachers and view your children's work. The night was a great success and enabled parents and visitors to have another opportunity to view the art display.
At our RLPS campus students have been able to view the shows presented by the Life Education Van staff. The sessions will continue for this week and we hope students enjoy the shows and the activities.
Our Mandurah students have been learning about animals that live in Australia and completing a variety of learning tasks including leaf rubbings and painting activities. The students also enjoyed a visit on Monday from Cricket Australia to talk about the local cricket club. Hopefully the club will get some new members after this visit.
The Bungaree students proudly showed their parents the wonderful work they had produced during the learning journey on the evening of the 6th September. We hope you enjoyed being students for the evening.
Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to one of our valued Outreach staff members, Mrs Jasmyn Hall. Mrs Hall has accepted a position closer to her home. Jasmyn has been a member of the outreach team since 2014 and has made many contributions to our service. We sincerely thank you Jaz and wish you all the best in your new school.
The Speech Pathology and Admin Team have been busy receiving applications for new student enrolments for 2017. The Placement Panel will meet in week two, term four and successful applicants will be notified shortly after that.
Thank you for completing the School Survey. Your feedback is valued to make our great school even better!
Have a safe and happy holiday and we hope you are able to spend some time outside to enjoy the spring weather.

Artacular
ARTACULAR 2016 ran from 9th September to 16th September was a massive success! This year’s theme was ‘Travelling around the world’.
The students created amazing art pieces from all over the world including Eiffel towers, dream catchers, Greek urns, penguins and life cycles.
Thank you so much to the families that came and visited over the course of the week or during Open Night. We look forward to bringing it back next year.
Mandurah Campus
Term 3 has flown by and we are excited to be wrapping up our learning ready for the holidays. This term we have been learning about animals that live in Australia. We have been reading some story books including ‘Possum Magic’, ‘Koala Lou’ and ‘Peter Parrots breakfast apples’ and making some of the animals from the stories.
We have enjoyed some art activities including collages with sticks and leaves that we’ve found in the playground, making parrots from our hand and feet prints, texture painted possums that are hanging in our tree and some Possum Magic pictures using glue resist painting techniques and leaf rubbings.
We have been enjoying the warmer weather and with the sunshine coming out we’ve enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time outside working on our ball skills. We’ve been practising kicking footballs and soccer balls and hitting the totem tennis ball with bats.
We are learning to share the equipment, take turns and have fun exploring different games. On Monday we had a visitor from Cricket Australia to talk to us about our local cricket club and we thought it would be a great opportunity to play some cricket in the playground. There will be some information on our local cricket club coming out this week.

In addition, students were given the opportunity to become teachers as they taught their parents some of the learning activities that they are involved in daily in their classrooms. 3.4
Students in 3.4 visited Artacular. They enjoyed looking at the amazing artwork and having their photos taken as a Babushka Doll. Students also chose an artist appreciation to the artist of their favourite piece.
As part of our history studies, our class have been exploring different dreamtime stories. This week we read "The Echidna and the Shade Tree." After reading the book students completed a book report. Overall the class gave this book an 8 out of ten. Their favourite parts were when the Echidna stole the Shade Tree and when the animals threw their spears at the Echidna.

Pinjarra Campus
Fairbridge Chapel
As part of our local history studies and after viewing pictures of the Fairbridge chapel, students in room 29 created pencil drawings of the Fairbridge chapel. The Chapel was designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker, in 1928 and completed in 1931. The Chapel is 56 feet long and 25 feet wide, and was built using local material including brick, jarrah and karri with a shingled roof. At completion of drawing they painted their sketches with coffee to create an aged appearance.
Spring
This past couple of weeks for science we have been looking at ‘Spring’ this was inspired by the wonderful Spring flowers that are popping up all over our gardens, parks, and at school to.
We all created pictures of spring flowers. Years 2 & 3 also created Haiku Poems about spring.
Spring Haiku Spring By Miley Robbins-White |
The children were inspired by group discussion on the topic and found this to be a fun and creative language writing activity that accompanied their art work.
Students in room 28 had fun during their dental health lesson creating a picture of a face using health food that is good for our teeth. The best bit was trying new food and then eating the picture at the end.

Banana Cinnamon Pancakes
These pancakes give a healthy twist to a classic breakfast favourite. Sweetened naturally by the bananas and honey, there are no unwanted nasties in these tasty treats, and they're also full of protein and good carbs and fats.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
- 1/4 cup chia seeds
- 1 cup spelt flour
- 1 cup buckwheat flour
- 1 tbs ground cinnamon
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbs raw honey
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
- 2 1/2 medium banana (ripe, mashed)
Method
- Process seeds in a food processor until they resemble fine crumbs.
- In a bowl, mix the seeds, flours, cinnamon and baking powder.
- In a separate bowl, mix the honey, milk, eggs and bananas.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients.
- Melt some butter or coconut oil (or use a mix of both), in a medium frying pan over medium heat. Ladle in the pancake mixture and flip once sizzling.
- Once both sides are cooked, repeat this process for the remaining mixture. Serve and enjoy!
Tips
- Use more or less milk depending on the thickness of the pancake you would like
- Serve the pancakes on their own, in lunch boxes, or with some whipped cream and berries!
- To save time, you can make this mixture the night before, ready to be turned into tasty little delights in the morning
- Great to pop in the lunch box for a healthy treat
Chicken and Zucchini Nuggets
Nuggets are a popular with kids because they are bite-sized and delicious, and when you make your own you can choose what goes in them making them healthier and extra tasty.
Ingredients
- 500 g chicken mince
- 2 tbs milk
- 1 cup wholemeal breadcrumbs
- 1 zucchini (coarsely grated)
- 1 golden shallot (finely diced)
- 1 tbs fresh flat-leaf parsley (finely chopped)
- 1 tbs olive oil
Method
- Combine all the ingredients, except the oil, in a large bowl. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to mix until thoroughly combined.
- Shape tablespoons of the mixture into nuggets and place on a tray lined with baking paper.
- Heat the oil in a large heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Cook the nuggets, in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, for 4 minutes each side or until light golden and cooked through. Transfer to paper towel to drain.
Tips
- Fussy eating tip: Chicken nuggets are a great vessel for introducing new flavours. Try adding grated carrot, sautéed chopped mushrooms, finely chopped spinach and a variety of herbs, such as thyme and basil
- These are great served on a roll with avocado, rocket and mayonnaise
- You can lightly fry the shallot before adding it to the mixture, if desired
- Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To freeze, place uncooked or cooked nuggets on a baking tray lined with baking paper and freeze for 3–4 hours, then transfer to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 months
- You can also use this mixture to make six large burger patties for older children and adults
Hidden Veggie Pizza
This mild mannered margarita pizza is packed with nutritious veggies and finished off with creamy mozzarella: what the kids don't know won't hurt them.
Ingredients
- 1 gourmet pizza base
- 1 carrot
- 1 celery stick
- 3 mushrooms
- 1/2 zucchini
- 1 onion
- 2 clove garlic
- 750 g passata (fresh tomato puree)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbs balsamic vinegar
- 1 buffalo mozzarella
- 1 handful basil leaves
Method
- Put the chopped veggies, onion and two garlic cloves into a food processor and blitz them until they become a thick paste that does not resemble vegetables in any way.
- Place a large, deep frying pan over medium heat and add two tablespoons of olive oil to the pan. Add the blitzed vegetables and fry them off until they are soft and aromatic.
- Add the passata, salt and sugar to the pan. Simmer until the sauce has reduced by about a quarter and thickened up a little.
- Add a splash of balsamic and simmer for another five minutes.
- Place the pizza base onto a lightly greased oven tray. Spread it with the hidden veggie sauce, then add slices of mozzarella.
- Cook for 10 - 12 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles a little bit.
- Remove from the oven and scatter with basil leaves (or not, depending on how allergic your kids are to 'green stuff'.) Slice into wedges and serve.
Tips
- You can add whatever toppings your kids like to this hidden veggie pizza: the secret is in the sauce
- If you don't have buffalo mozzarella, plain old grated cheese works just as well
- Add whatever veggies you have in the crisper to the sauce, just make sure you pulverise them beyond recognition to avoid detection
