Principal’s Report

Welcome to the newsletter for week six, we hope you are enjoying the new format from Schoolzine.

Last Monday was an exciting day for the Rockingham Lakes Campus students with ‘Books on Blankets’. Thank you to parents and caregivers for supporting this community event and assisting your children to dress as a book character. The students loved seeing their teachers dressed up and joining in the fun of the day.

We hope you enjoy reading about our Bungaree, Mandurah and Pinjarra students in this newsletter.

As this busy term continue,s we have many exciting events coming up including our annual Topsy Turvy Day in week eight across all sites.  The day enables the students to be teachers for the day to work with parents and caregivers on  literacy and numeracy activities.

Continuing our welcome with parent and community involvement will be the annual Open Nights at most campuses. Please check the calendar for the dates and more information will be sent out shortly. At our Rockingham Lakes campus the Open night will include a chance to view the fantastic Artacular exhibition in the Resource Room as well as the chance to view classes and chat to the teachers.

The Artacular Exhibition will formally open at the Junior Assembly on 9th September where parents can later view the display. Students and teachers have been working very hard on the art works and we thank Miss Power for her work in coordinating this.

We are currently in the process of holding Transition meetings across all sites. The meetings are an opportunity to find out about the Transition process for 2016 and 2017. This is a positive experience for all students and we ask that parents support their children’s transition from PLDS into their return to their mainstream school.

We would like to ask that parents who are intending to leave PLDS for various reasons, other than our normal ex iting process, to please phone or write to us about your intention as soon as possible.

The Life Education van will be visiting the Rockingham Lakes campus in weeks nine and ten to present informative and fun session to our students. Further information will be included in this newsletter and permission forms will be sent home shortly.

You will also receive information about the Parent Survey shortly. It is very important that we receive your feedback about our school so we can provide the best service to our families. Please take the time to fill it out and return to us.

Books on Blankets

Thank you to everyone who came along to Books on Blankets for Book Week on Monday.

It was wonderful to see so many parents on campus reading to the children and participating in such a fun and enjoyable event.

Students and staff looked fantastic in their costumes!

Book Week was a huge success and everyone had lots of fun.

Pre-Primary

On Friday the 19th August all the Rocky Lakes and Peel Pre-Primary classes participated in a mini Olympics.

Students took part in an opening ceremony and paraded with torches and laurels, and then the games began. Students enjoyed basketball, running races, sack races, long jump, hurdles, shot put and discus.

Finally, students were awarded medals and stood proudly on the podium for a photo. It was a fantastic to see all of the students participating and cheering for their classmates.

Kindy

It was a lovely sunny day for Books on Blankets. We loved having Ethan’s mum come I to read with us in Kindy A.

Kindy A practicing their fine motor skills using our new light box.

For the last few weeks the Kindys have been learning the sound ‘P’. They had so much fun making delicious pizza last week.

After the pizzas were done, they sequenced the steps it took to make.

The pizzas were yummy!!

Our theme in Kindy this term is animals so we have and will be learning about pets, wild, farm and zoo animals.

We have a vet home corner set up where the students can go to the vets with their animals and we have been reading lots of stories about vets.

Mrs MacPherson as our “Kindy Vet”

The students love using their imagination play in the Peel Vet corner

Last Day of Term

Mandurah Campus

Room 14

Term 3 has been a busy one for all the students in Room 14 at the Mandurah site. We have been working on our comprehension skills on Fridays through lots of hands on cooking activities. Not only are we improving our language skills but we are becoming pretty good cooks too!

At the beginning of term the class created a stick person out of pop sticks and matchsticks and then used this person as a character in a story. Students then turned their story into a book that they illustrated themselves. Everyone put in a lot of effort and the books look amazing!

We celebrated science week by using lots of brain power to solve a daily conundrum. We also made a tornado in a bottle and created posters about unusual science facts. Did you know that some sharks can live to be 100 years old?

The students in Room 14 recently celebrated being 100 days smarter as we passed our 100th day of school for the year. One of the fun activities we did was to create a picture of what we might look like when we are 100 years old.

The annual ‘Artacular’ will be on soon at the Rocky Lakes campus so Room 14 created some artwork in the theme of North America. We made dream catchers and a collage of a North American Indian.

We have been reading the story ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and this week we planted some beans. Hopefully our beans will grow into a beanstalk like Jasper’s did. Watch this space for photos of growing beans.

Bungaree Campus

Room 1

This week, as part of science week activities students in Year 3, Room 1 at Bungaree participated in the ‘Marshmallow Catapult Challenge’. All students from years 3 to 6 were given the opportunity to participate in trials to see who could catapult their marshmallow into the highest scoring zone. First students had to choose which type of ruler they would use, wooden, plastic or metal. Then they had to attach the bucket, decide which size marshmallow they would use and through trial and error decide where to position the base to get maximum projection. Noah, Cameron, Bill and Issac from team ‘NIB’s’ won a position in the finals by getting a high score of 50 in the trials.

On the big day the school assembled to see the nail biting final. After several heats, two teams had equal scores, a shoot off occurred to see who could hit or get closest to the 50 point landing zone. Team ‘NIB’s’ displayed strengths of team work, communication and negotiation which saw them win 1st place.

We are all really proud of their achievements, in particular the way they demonstrated to other students what can be achieved when you work together.

Olympic Games

This term the students in Room 29 have been learning about the Olympic Games. This included looking at the seven values associated with the Olympics. These are made up of the three Olympic values, Friendship, Respect and Excellence along with four Paralympic values of Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality.

When looking at Olympic logos, students tried to use their bodies and work as a team to reproduce the Rio logo.

The logo

Hunter, Blair and Cody are working together to make their own representation of the Rio 2016 logo

Riley, Kalel and Bailey demonstrate their ability to work as a team to make another representation of the Rio 2016 logo

Girl Power was the name this group gave to their representation of the 2016 Olympic Logo

We also learnt about the Olympic rings, we now know that there are five interlocking rings. They are blue, yellow, black, green, and red in colour and that the rings represent 5 world continents, Africa, Asia, America, Europe and Australia. We combined handwriting with our artist ability to create Olympic mobiles.

Open Night

It’s was lovely to see so many parents attending Pinjarra Primary School’s open night which was held on Wednesday evening the 24th August. This night provided parents with an opportunity to view and informally discuss daily activities and occurrences of their child’s classroom.

Thank you to everyone who attended prior or on the night. It was also a wonderful opportunity to thank parents for the wonderful job they do working together with staff as partners in the education of their children.
