Principal's Report
Welcome to Week 4, Term 3 and all the news for the winter term. The weather has certainly kept with the season trend of wet, windy and chilly. Consequently there are a few cold and flu viruses doing the rounds and lots of students and quite a few teachers are having to stay home to get well. If your child is unwell, please keep them home and let the class room teacher and school know via the Skoolbag app, make a phone call or write in the communication book. If your child is away for more than an couple of days and we have not had notification, your teacher will make contact to check on your child's return date for school and to see how they are doing and let them know their friends miss them. We are happy to provide work packs for extended breaks from school if you think your child is able to do them. However rest and sleep is usually the best course of action to get them back to school as soon as possible.
In these cold months please ensure that your children have some winter uniform items to keep them warm and dry. Our second hand uniform store is reasonably well stocked at present and of course navy track pants from any store will suffice to keep little legs warm. Please be aware that students get very hungry in the cold weather and often need more in their lunch boxes to keep them going and due to the heating still need to drink plenty of water too.
In the last newsletter we mentioned the importance of updating your contact details and changes of address, mobile numbers, emergency contacts etc. Could we please also request that you keep your class room teacher and the office informed of any changes to medical or health conditions as we may be required to write up a medical action plan to care for your child while they are at school. We need parents signed consent to administer any medications or first aid specific to medical conditions and are happy to work with families to ensure students are well cared for while at school.
Well done to all those enthusiastic supporters, both staff and students, who dressed up for Derby Day last Friday . Other exciting events are coming up at all our campuses this term including our PLDS annual Topsy Turvy Day where our students become the teachers and teach their adult guests some fun things they have learned in literacy and numeracy. This is coming up in week 8 so please mark your calendars for your sites dates so you are able to come along. This is a great session and a wonderful opportunity to see how your child is progressing in confidence and ability. There are also athletics carnivals and Open Days to keep an eye out for. This week Bungaree Campus have been to the Circus and we look forward to hearing all about their experiences. As always there are plenty of high quality and exciting learning experiences and opportunities at all our sites so continue to read our new and improved newsletter for updates.

We have had such a fun and busy start to Term 3. We were very lucky to have been involved in a meet and greet with Rick the Rock and Brad from the Eagles. They taught us all about how to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. They had a very important message on staying resilient and 'shaking it off'. The children loved Rick and thought that he was very funny and cheeky at times. Please remember that we are a 'Crunch and Sip' school and that your child will need a piece of fruit or veg and a drink every day.
This Friday, Room 11, 14 and 18 had their class assembly. Huge congratulations to everyone for remembering their lines, the story and the song. Thank you to all the parents that came along and provided the shark or penguin costumes and a big thanks to Mrs Harper for coming along and videoing it all for us. The whole school loved the assembly and we were all so proud of them all!

The theme for the Rockingham Lakes PS and Peel LDS Artacular later in the year is "Around the World". Room 1.3 will be submitting art pieces that are related to this continent. Hence we have been learning some interesting facts about Antarctica. We have found that it is the coldest and windiest place on Earth. Amazingly, it is also the driest place on the planet and is considered a desert!
Antarctica is a very harsh environment in which to live, however animals such as seals thrive in the extremely cold conditions. We conducted an experiment to test out one of the reasons why animals are able to survive there. Ice blocks were placed into a big container of water. We had "gloves" to protect our hands from the water. Each glove was made of 2 Glad snap lock bags, one placed inside the other. One glove also contained vegetable oil. The children found that when they wore the glove with the oil, that the water did not feel nearly as cold as the glove without the oil. In effect, the oil was acting as an insulator against the cold water. Animals like seals have a layer of blubber which helps to protect them from the extremely cold weather.

Recently the students in year 2/3 at Pinjarra Primary School participated in celebrating 100 days of school. One of the tasks for the day was to build something with Lego using exactly 100 pieces.
Bailey proudly produced his own design of a tree cutter in which he used exactly 100 pieces of Lego. Bailey's hard work and the thought that went into his amazing tree cutter enabled him to receive a letter of commendation from the Deputy Principal at Pinjarra Primary. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement Bailey.
Sienna and Izabella worked together to make a castle and horse and carriage using 100 pieces of Lego.
Rachel and Aleisha work together, to count out and decide what to make with 100 pieces of Lego
Blair and Riley are displaying their strength and determination by testing how much longer than 100seconds they could hold a bridge position

On Tuesday, students at our Bungaree site visited the Joseph Ashton Circus.

The students were very excited and got to ask some interesting questions about circus life!!
Some of us even wanted to run away to the circus!!!
